Brief history of the city
If you explore the history of Ahtopol, it turns out that it is a rather ancient city. Greek settlements appeared here at approximately the same time as in the city. After being captured by the Romans, the city received the name Peronticus. As a result of barbarian raids, the settlement was often destroyed. And so one of the restorations was carried out by Agathon, a commander from Byzantium, who named the newly rebuilt city by his own name - Agatopolis.
In 1918, Ahtopol was completely destroyed as a result of a strong fire, and it had to be restored almost from scratch. Only small fragments of the fortress walls remain from the old city. Among the modern attractions, the monastery of St. John and the Church of the Ascension should also be noted. In addition, near the city there is the Malka Papia mountain peak, which is part of the Strandja Mountains.
From the sea side, Ahtopol looks very attractive, green and fresh. Despite its location on rocky terrain, the city is distinct beautiful scenery and comfortable climate.

Sunny Beach

To date, almost all hotels have been reconstructed and meet the highest requirements for comfort and service. If we allow ourselves to directly compare Sunny Beach with Golden Sands in the north, this resort is more dynamic and, perhaps, more hippy.
In any case, it is much more extensive, so bicycle rickshaws and scooter and mountain bike rental shops, of which there are many along the carefully maintained embankment, earn good revenue. Even the police on Sunny Beach travel on bicycles. Behind the first line of hotels closest to the sea, several tourist trains run from the southern part of the resort to the northern. The beach here is wide, with fine sand and well maintained. It is surrounded in the center and on the southern side by high sand dunes. In the north, unfortunately, similar dunes were destroyed during development. Sun loungers and umbrellas keep you cool and comfortable, and each stretch of beach has snack bars, drink stands, a restaurant, and rentals for all sorts of water-related props. There are pedalos, motorcycles, bananas, huge lifebuoys, and so on and so forth. On some sections of the beach, massage therapists work on sunbeds under awnings; on others, they simply walk among vacationers and offer their services on the spot.
Hotels are located along the coast in several rows. On the first line, where good view on the sea, there are luxury hotels. On the second, third and sometimes even on the fourth line, housing is simpler, but much cheaper, quieter and greener: after all, Sunny Beach, like other Bulgarian resorts, is replete with beautiful old trees. Supermarkets provide holidaymakers with drinks, treats and newspapers. Hotel employees turn a blind eye to the fact that guests buy cheaper drinks outside the hotel.
Promenade
The promenade in the afternoon and evening turns into a huge stage for shows. Excursion program
The most popular family excursions in Sunny Beach include a visit to the Dolphinarium in Varna, a jeep safari or a Monster Truck ride along the slopes of the Balkan Mountains. Saint Vlas
The resort town between Sunny Beach and Elenite is named after the nearest village, located a little higher on the slopes of the Balkan Mountains. Unlike the two neighboring settlements, Sveti Vlas (Sveti Vlas) has its own architectural face. A striking example of this is the Manastira hotel, built in the style of the Rila Monastery. In several old houses around a common courtyard, shoemakers, carpenters and potters demonstrate their crafts, which come from time immemorial. A small exhibition room contains national costumes and woven carpets. Elenite
12 km east of Sunny Beach, on a green slope above a narrower but superb sandy beach, lies the fashionable Elenite resort Holiday Village, operating on the All-Inclusive principle. The decoration of the eastern apse retains a very ancient element, actually pagan: this is a decorative frieze with a swastika.
St. John the Baptist
Built in the 11th century. Church of St. John the Baptist (Sveti Yoan Krastitel) with a powerful, almost devoid of decoration, façade made of rubble. The three-nave interior contains remains of frescoes. This church also serves as a gallery; In the summer, wonderful classical music concerts take place here every week.
Ethnographical museum
There is a very interesting Ethnographic Museum in Nessebar. It is created in a typical house of the National Renaissance era. Its second floor is decorated with beautiful wooden carvings, while the first floor is built of rough stone and was intended for storage areas and workshops.
St. Stephen's Church
This is the only church in which the multicolor frescoes of the 16th-17th centuries are perfectly preserved. The frescoes depict biblical scenes, among which the scene of the Last Judgment stands out, and portraits of patrons who supported the church with their donations. In the narthex there is an image of a medieval ship carved into the plaster. The church premises are decorated with a magnificent iconostasis and pulpit (XVIII century) with skillful carvings and gilding.
Captain's house
The old captain's house (Kapetanska Sreshta) from the 19th century, located high above the port of Nessebar. The rooms on the ground floor, lined with dark wood, where goods and tools were stored, are today used as restaurant rooms on cold days. But it’s much nicer to sit outside with a view of the Black Sea and the sparkling lights of the beach and hotel area of \u200b\u200bNessebar. True, the idyll is somewhat spoiled by the view of the bazaar below the port, which from above looks like a chaotic jumble of tent tarpaulins, cardboard and scraps of plastic. Beaches around Nessebar
The southern coast of the peninsula is surrounded by a sometimes narrow, sometimes wider pebble beach, on which many of those working in Old Nessebar spend their lunch breaks. Unfortunately, the beach is not cleaned, so it is more suitable for a quick dip in the water than for lounging around to your heart's content.
A beautiful wide sandy beach is located along a spit that juts south into the bay all the way to Pomorie. Here, during socialist times, hotels and departmental holiday homes were built, most of which still operate for Bulgarian holidaymakers to this day. In addition, a lot of people come to this beach for one day, so it is usually crowded here.
The third beach surrounds the bay between New Nessebar and Sunny Beach to the north of the new quarters. This beach can also be very busy in the summer months, although relaxation there is greatly disturbed by loud music from the Aquapark, which is located nearby in Sunny Beach.
Guests of Nessebar can find the best conditions for swimming in Sunny Beach, where buses and tourist trains depart from the bus station in front of the city wall several times an hour. When the sea is calm, boats depart there every hour.
The inconspicuous town of Ravda is nestled 3 km south of Nessebar. This is an ideal place for those who would like to live or dine at a reasonable price near the very expensive Nessebar and at the same time find nice beach. The local sandy beach slopes very gently into the sea, which is especially appreciated by families with small children. Although Ravda is gradually catching up with Nessebar in terms of its tourist infrastructure, it still remains a small, cozy vacation spot for lovers of solitude.
Pomorie
About 14 km south of Nessebar, at the southern tip of Lake Pomorie, lies modern city Pomorie Lake Pomorie (Pomorie Jezero) is a lagoon separated by a sand dune from the sea, in which salt has been produced by evaporation since ancient times. 
Pomorie is still the most important supplier of salt for Bulgaria, and also provides mineral resorts Bulgaria with healing mud. Hotels in Pomorie also offer treatment procedures. On the western side of the Old Town there is the Monastery of St. George, founded in the 12th century, but which has come down to us in the architectural appearance of the 19th century. This is the only monastery on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast where monks still live. Back at the end of the 20th century. The pious brothers made their own wine, but since only a few monks remained here, the monastery vineyards were rented out. Burgas
Being at once a port city, a base for a petrochemical complex and a destination for charter flights for holidaymakers on the southern coast of Bulgaria, Burgas has many faces. The outskirts welcome guests to a city of modern panel blocks and industrial enterprises, and the city center with its extensive Seaside Park and a beautiful pedestrian area is charming and friendly.
The central square with train and bus stations, Garova Square, is located in the southern part of the Old Town, southwest of the Seaside Park. Pedestrian zone on the street. Most guests of Burgas prefer to spend time in shops and restaurants. For the Bulgarian wallet, their range is excessively expensive, but this does not make them less visited. Tourists with a reserve of euros can shop here quite cheaply. Branded clothing, shoes and watches here are usually genuine, as many companies have branches in Bulgaria. But here they are much cheaper than in Western European stores. However, you need to understand at least a little about the products and be sure to check their quality and brand name.
Ethnographic Museum of Burgas
In a typical Bulgarian Renaissance building with a beautiful garden around it, there is this museum with a collection of national costumes, furniture and household utensils from the southern Black Sea region. The most interesting exhibits include fearful masks and kukeri fur costumes, which in some regions are still used to drive out winter spirits and invoke fertility for the new agricultural year. The costumes of the nestinars, fire walkers from the southern Bulgarian village of Bulgari, are also on display here.
In the northeast of the street. St. Cyril and Methodius joins Demokratsia Boulevard, which leads along the Primorsky Park (Morska Gradina) back to the bus station. Many restaurants in Burgas offer relaxation and food in the cool greenery or with a beautiful view of the sea, a little spoiled, however, by oil tankers and container ships. It is better to refrain from swimming on the open beach of the park due to poor water quality.
Burgas lakes
The largest wet biotope in Bulgaria lies just before the gates of the port city. It consists of four shallow lakes: Poda, Mandrenskoe, Vaiya and Atanasov, where two thirds of the bird species living in Bulgaria can be observed. This 9,500-hectare habitat also serves as a welcome resting place for flocks of migratory birds during their migration along Via Ponticum. Hundreds of thousands of birds gather around Burgas in spring and autumn.
Poda Nature Reserve
The reserve is located 8 km south of Burgas on the road to Sozopol. Through telescopes mounted on the roof, visitors can observe Dalmatian pelicans, red-necked geese, avocets, corncrakes and gulls. During the migratory season, storks, spotted eagles and many other winged travelers gather here in flocks.
Chernomorets
In the resort of Chernomorets, a few kilometers north of Sozopol, there is a beautifully maintained city park and a wonderful city beach, which are favored by guests of the local campsites, mostly local residents. In the pretty center of the town, several restaurants invite you to stop by for a relaxing break.
Sozopl
If you drive south along the coast to the artistic town of Sozopol (Sozopol), the road passes through an amazing landscape consisting of lagoons and lakes. 
The area, protected as a nature reserve and bird nesting area, can only be visited on a scheduled guided tour. The abundance of birds will provide an opportunity for those interested in ornithology to observe rare species of waterfowl and migratory birds.

St. John's Island
Right in front of Sozopol, an island rises in the sea - the largest on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. In the 13th century An Orthodox monastery was built here, of which now only ruins remain. Today, St. John's Island serves as a bird sanctuary, where you can, among other things, observe pygmy cormorants. From the pier to the street. Beaches of Sozopol
There are two city beaches in Sozopol, both of which are located in the eastern part of the peninsula. One borders the park area, the other extends south of the hill on which the modern district of the city of Harmanite stands, along the coastal road towards Tsarevo. Both beaches are wide, with fine sand, equipped with protective umbrellas and sun loungers and provide a full range of sports equipment for all kinds of water and beach activities.
So far both beaches are firmly occupied local residents, however, every year more and more vacationers from other Eastern European countries join them. In the summer months it is almost impossible to find a free place - so we recommend visiting the beach of the Golden Fish campsite in the north or Smokinia in the south. Almost all hotels in Sozopol are concentrated in Harmanit.
Smokinia Beach
To the south of the city, the coastline with its beautiful, untouched sandy beaches is framed by copses. Tourists, mostly from Eastern European countries, set up their tents in the shade of trees at numerous, simply equipped tent sites. Located 4 km south of Smokinia, the gently sloping beach, up to 100 m wide, is open not only to tent dwellers and is very popular among young Bulgarians. In general, it is not forbidden to even set up a tent somewhere “in the wild.” The health and safety of visitors is ensured by a couple of simple beach bars and swimming instructors, who are especially attentive due to the frequent strong surf here.
Dunes

Travel agencies organize boat excursions around Ropotamo, mainly in the section from the bridge to the mouth, some then go out to sea and go around Zmeiny (Zmiyski) Island, which, like the mouth of Ropotamo, is a protected area.
