In general, we went to Hong Kong on purpose: to arrange a little acclimatization on the road from a Thai village to Moscow and at the same time get rid of the strong desire to eat our air ticket to Russia along with our passport right now. Hong Kong with its housing was simply perfect for this task, I highly recommend it.

If in other capitals of the world there are special “backpacker” or simply tourist quarters, then in Hong Kong, with its population density and development, each building is already a separate quarter. Therefore, almost all backpackers in Hong Kong live compactly in two anthill skyscrapers called Chunking Mansion And Mirador Mansion. Widely known in narrow circles, Chunking Mansion can be compared with, and its younger brother Mirador Mansion can be compared with the quieter and calmer Rambuttri.

Any self-respecting backpacker should visit Hong Kong guesthouses like Khao San. However, you can spend the night in another place.

These two hives are located very well - in Kowloon, within walking distance from the Tsim Sha Tsui embankment. From here you can walk to, and to museums, and to the Star Ferry pier, and to. The metro and bus stop from the airport are also very close. There are a lot of budget eateries in the area, and 7-11 is right on the ground floor.

This is where the positive qualities of Chunking and Mirador Mansion end.

I have already talked about a convenient index of Hong Kong prices compared to Thailand: nominally everything costs about the same money (a bottle of water - 10, a unit of food - 30, etc.), but in fact the exchange rate of the Hong Kong dollar is five times higher than the baht.

There’s a similar picture with housing: normal hotels in Hong Kong start at about 700 local dollars (but that’s already 100 American dollars and not particularly budget-friendly), and for 250 monetary units and in Thailand you can only count on a normal overnight stay in the north.

In order not to be unfounded, I made a selection of the cheapest hotels in the Tsim Sha Tsui area. Those who are observant will notice that the prices are not per room, but per bed in the dormitory! 40 bucks for a dorm and 100 for a double in some Chinese bedbug shop, how cute.

Well, the lowest one is just our option: $40-50 for a separate room. What can you get for this money? Here's what. We go inside our den.

Both Chungking and Mirador are well-worn panel high-rise buildings hung with condos. From the outside they look something like this:

The first floor is occupied by the ubiquitous mafia of Indian tailors (only it seems to me that they are clearly selling something more fancy than jackets there?) and the ubiquitous sellers of photographic equipment. Buying equipment in Hong Kong is a separate fat topic, but in a nutshell I will say - you can’t buy anything in such shops! IN best case scenario This is not new equipment restored after repair; at worst, it is defective or even a fake. Well, as you know, it’s better not to buy anything from the Indians at all, you’ll be healthier.

The same Indians pester passers-by on the street in front of the entrance with offers to buy Rolex, Ray Ban, cameras, lenses and the devil of a bald man. I was somehow unpleasantly surprised by such an abundance of Aryans in Hong Kong. However, this is an English protectorate, so there is nothing surprising here.

The elevator in Chungking is the talk of the town: they say you can wait for your turn for hours. In Mirador we have never experienced such passions; occasionally there would be a small queue in the evening.

Next to the elevator is a list of institutions located on the floors. If the entire building is a block, then each floor is a separate street: there are several guesthouses on each floor.

Individual apartments are being converted into guesthouses here. One apartment - one guesthouse. The reception is usually shared by several guest rooms, and people seem to simply hand over their apartments to management. So, I booked a room in one guest house, confirmation came from another, and they settled us, I still didn’t understand where =))

We're on the 13th floor. Arrived:

Each floor of the Mirador Mansion is a kind of labyrinth hung with rags, in which the barred iron doors of your guesthouses are hidden. All spaces not occupied by guesthouses are occupied by Hindu sewing workshops. You can do photo shoots and film films in the corridors.

In the center of the hive there is a courtyard-well into which people smoke, spit, blow their nose and dry their clothes.

But now you have finally found the reception of your guesthouse for the third time. At the reception it turns out that you have to pay for everything in this life: a window in the room (although you seemed to have booked with a window) will cost you an additional 100 dollars per day, and the Internet (although it was supposedly stated to be free) will cost you 20. It was still too early to check in, so we dropped off our things at the guest house (for free, hooray!), said we’d think about the window, and went off to drink coffee.

We didn’t really understand what it was, but the impudent tone of the receptionist most resembled a scam. She very professionally gave nightmares to all the new arrivals, and I must say, it was effective: frightened by the Hong Kong realities and prices, the Thai-Chinese tourists bleated something nervously and quickly agreed to everything.

At all there are two ways to reduce the cost of your accommodation in Hong Kong: take a room without window or no toilet: both are available in abundance in local guest houses. So, I conjure - anything, just not a hole without a window and with a toilet! In conditions of hellish humidity and with ever-flowing Chinese pipes, it will be hell. And you will have a shock right in the room at a distance of a maximum of a meter from the pillow, have no doubt about it.

So, upon our return, we were told that a room with a window and “almost a toilet” had miraculously been found. Based on the confusing explanations, it was difficult to understand what this “almost” meant, so we waved our hand and agreed. As a result, we got a closet about the size of a train compartment, but with panoramic glazing and an excellent view from the 13th floor on Nathan Road. The toilet was “across the road” - as in ordinary apartment, which is what our guest house was, but the rest of the rooms had built-in bathrooms (I don’t know how the Chinese achieve this with one riser per apartment, and I don’t want to know), and no one else used our push.

Our room is an absolutely typical and even very successful option for budget accommodation in Hong Kong. Clean, quiet, inexpensive by local standards. You shouldn't expect anything better from local guests. At least there were no bedbugs (yes, some guest houses have them, read the reviews carefully) and horrifying tiles on the walls.

Oddly enough, the room turned out to be cozy and after 5 days we somehow even got used to it. In addition to two beds, it also contained a chair, an air conditioner, a TV under the ceiling and one square meter of free space.

Here are a couple more examples of typical Hong Kong accommodation in the $50 per night area. In the photo, the hosts of the guesthouses are competing in the wide-angle of their lenses (the owner of even the most shabby guesthouse can afford a wide angle in Hong Kong!).

A coffin like ours, beautiful tiles and iron beds. If the window is covered, it means there is something wrong with it (or it is not there, it simply is not there): a window in Hong Kong guest houses is of great value and is not hidden in the photo.

This is the same number, but shot at an ultra-wide angle. It's a completely different matter! There's something wrong with the window again, but at least it's there.

And here they saved on the photographer, but it was fair. Iron beds and tiles again!

But here is a den without a window (this is not a window in the ceiling, as one might think, but a fluorescent lamp). But a refrigerator and painting! And some kind of suspicious-looking cabinet on the wall.

But here is a wonderful double room, practically a presidential suite. It will cost a hundred bucks, no less.
