Coral island. Phuket. Coral Island (Coral Island) Thailand coral island

Meanwhile, initiation into travelers continued. The rainy season is already approaching, and the beaches of Phuket are becoming less attractive and clean every day. And we really wanted to show Masha what a beach holiday can really be like in Thailand. Without thinking twice, we bought an excursion to Coral Island, which is located near Phuket. I didn’t want an exhausting and long trip, like to, which, by the way, is no longer safe to visit at the end of April. Coral Island ticked all the boxes!

Coral Island

Excursion to Coral Island

At 6:50 in the morning a minibus had already been picked up for me in Phuket Town, and I and the driver went to collect all the tourists. We stopped at Kamala, then to Patong, where I picked up Masha, and soon we were brought to. It is not clear for what reasons they took me first, because they could have taken me last, since the minibus after Patong proceeded to the Chalong area again past our condo... I could have slept half an hour more. Oh well. The main thing is that we arrived

A crowd of dozens of Chinese and a few Europeans were waiting in line to board the speedboat. Masha and I walked around the pier and bought water at a stall. Tip: be sure to take water with you to Coral Island from home. On the pier it costs 20 baht, and on the island a small bottle will cost you 50 baht.

Our group loaded into the speedboat and after 10 minutes, exactly how long it seemed to me to swim to the coral island, we went down to the beach.

Speedboats are assigned a specific place and they do not interfere with swimming at all

Coral Island - first impressions

How good! There are almost no people on the beach. A couple of people are swimming, and they are very far away. Lots of space. White and clean sand. The sea is transparent. Not as blue as on the island of Racha and certainly not as turquoise as on the Similan Islands, but still very clean water.

As if the coral island had not heard about the fact that it is no longer the season in this region

Don't flatter yourself! And on small islands it is possible that garbage may appear

Masha did not regret that we sailed here and said that it was a complete thrill. Today we have a full day of rest. No traveling, visiting temples or parks. Just lying around and doing nothing on the beach on the paradise island of Coral.

Where can I order a transfer from the airport?

We use the service - KiwiTaxi
We ordered a taxi online and paid by card. We were met at the airport with a sign with our name on it. We were taken to the hotel in a comfortable car. You've already talked about your experience in this article.

The Chinese are separate, the people are separate

Do you know what struck me on this island? I don’t know how this happened, but our guide told us that he recommends swimming on the right side of the beach. And the left side is reserved for the Chinese. Are Chinese tourists really behaving so badly that they are being shut out? It’s not hard to believe; we ourselves have witnessed the intolerable upbringing of Chinese tourists. But, still, they are people too, I even somehow felt sorry for them.

Funny picture. All nationalities swim in one part of the island, and only the Chinese in the other. There is a rope stretched in the middle of the beach, like a discreet but visible divider between “people and Chinese.” The Chinese are not even brought to eat in establishments where they serve a buffet for other tourists. They also eat separately, in the same place where they bathe.

This is how the Thais care about the holidays of those who come to Coral Island. As a result, you don’t intersect with Chinese tourists anywhere at all. I wonder if they themselves are not ashamed?

What to see on the Coral Island excursion

Nothing, just one beautiful beach. Bask in the sun, sleep, swim and snorkel. Masha had her own, so we did not take public masks and snorkels on the boat. Masha swam far from the shore, but saw only sea urchins, a couple of gray unidentified fish and yellow minke whales. Unlike Racha Island, there are no other beaches on Coral. There is no observation deck either. To all my requests to tell me what can be seen here besides the beach, the Thais shrugged their shoulders.

Lunch on schedule

After 3 hours of this kind of seal rest, we went for lunch. Lunch is served at the only hotel on the island Coral Island Resort.

The buffet was delicious. Rice, noodles, chicken, fish. For some reason there was no coffee or tea. I had to drink water.

From the restaurant we had a view of the beach

What to do on Coral Island in your free time

We were somehow tired of sunbathing and swimming, and we went to the hotel territory. It is not closely guarded and therefore anyone from the street from the beach can get there.

We took advantage of this and spent half an hour in the blue pool.

Later it turned out that there were Korean divers in scuba gear sitting under the water the entire time we were swimming. We were scared, and then we laughed wildly until we cried, because from afar we mistook them for a gurgling jacuzzi.

Then we walked past the houses. The bungalow, by the way, is in excellent condition. Perhaps they were recently renovated or they are simply constantly being looked after and not started. So, it would be great to spend one or two days on a secluded paradise island in the mornings and evenings, surrounded by greenery, flowers and access to the sea!

The view from the houses is something like this

Let's go to the Chinese

There were still two and a half hours left before sailing to Phuket, and Masha and I went to explore. See how the Chinese spend their time. Chinese tourists, as always, sit in the water right near the shore, but in vests. We don’t understand what kind of panic they have about drowning a meter from the shore. And why are they always wearing vests? Doesn't anyone really know how to swim? Or are they also intimidated by hotel guides? While discussing Chinese tourists with Masha, we passed by a lady in her early 40s, who at that moment loudly filled her mouth with saliva and spat relishfully on the sand, like a drunken man.

The question immediately disappeared: why are the Chinese separated from everyone else?

The left Chinese part of the beach of Coral Island

We also didn’t find anything interesting on the Chinese part. The sand here is a bit dirty, especially at the end of the beach; they don’t even clean up the trash there.

We came back, sat down on the chairs and both fell asleep. We woke up just before leaving. We still waited for our group for 45 minutes and finally sailed to Phuket.

Ko He, known among tourists mainly as Coral Island, is one of the most popular islands located south of Phuket. As the name suggests, it is well known for its shallow coral reefs and excellent snorkeling conditions. The name of the island Koh He does not actually mean "Coral Island" in Thai. This name means "Crowded Island". Koh He is indeed quite a crowded island, as many tourists come here every day, wanting to go snorkeling or just relax on the beautiful beach. However, Coral Island is not always crowded and there are quiet places where you can enjoy a relaxing holiday.

Beaches of Koh He Island

The beaches of Coral Island near Phuket attract many tourists as they offer excellent opportunities for relaxation, swimming and snorkeling. Despite its relatively small size, Ko He has 3 beautiful beaches.
The coral island is 2.5 km long and is almost entirely covered by jungle. There are two good beaches on the north side of the island, opposite Phuket, and also a small but nice little beach on the south side of the island. There is absolutely nothing in the interior of the island except overly dense vegetation and overly steep slopes. Therefore, KO He is not suitable for development or agriculture.

Long Beach

This 800-meter long beach is the most popular on Coral Island. This is where tourists come on excursions. The beach has plenty of sun loungers, a beach volleyball court and even a small water sports center. There are also several restaurants and bars here. At the eastern end of this beach is the Coral Island Resort, which has small beachfront bungalows and a private pool. Snorkeling conditions in the Long Beach area are actually not the best on the island, as much of the coral close to the shore has been damaged due to constant tourist activity. However, if you swim about 100 meters from the shore, you will see a lot of corals and colorful fish.

Banana Beach

If you want to avoid the crowds, then you need to go to Banana Beach. This beach is located east of Long Beach and is about 2 times smaller. There is only one restaurant, a toilet and a few sun loungers. The best way to get to the beach is by boat, although there is a path connecting Long Beach and Banana Beach that goes through the jungle. To hike along it you will definitely need good shoes.
Banana Beach is a much calmer beach than Long Beach. You can snorkel here right off the shore. The shallow coral reef is an ideal snorkeling spot for beginners and children.

Freedom Beach

If you want to explore the entire island of Ko He, you can take a boat to Freedom Beach, located on the south side. This is a small beach with a restaurant and a few sun loungers. The beach is located in a bay with steep hills around. Sometimes on the beach you can see a giant monitor lizard that comes from the jungle to eat the food left by the restaurant owners. A good snorkeling spot at Freebom Beach is right off the coast, but if you swim a little further you can see lots of corals, beautiful rocks and a variety of marine life.

How to get to Koh He Island

Many local tour operators offer excursions to Coral Island. As a rule, the cost of these excursions is low and is approximately 1000 baht. However, you can get to Ko He on your own. To do this, you need to come to Rawai Pier or Chalong Pier and rent a long-tail boat or speedboat. As a rule, many local fishermen do not refuse additional income. If you gather a small group, then a trip to Koh He Island on a rented boat may cost you less than if you buy an excursion for each person. Renting a longtail boat should cost you between 1,500 and 2,000 baht, while renting a speedboat will cost around 5,000 baht.

Coral island, a beautiful island with snow-white fine sand and luxurious tropical vegetation. It is located a few kilometers south of Phuket island.

The size of the coral island is only 500 x 2500 m, from the nearest point of Phuket Island, it is 5 km to Coral Island, and 10 km from Chalong Pier.

It is not as popular and “promoted” as . But it can rightfully be called a real tropical paradise.

The sand on the island is white. The sea near the island is clean and calm. The vegetation covering the island is pleasing to the eye. Literally a few meters from the island there are coral reefs, around which countless schools of brightly colored tropical fish circle.

As you might have guessed, Coral Island is a good place to go snorkeling. It is especially worth noting that snorkeling off the coast of Coral Island is good by the highest standards.

In addition to snorkeling, Coral Island is also great for a lazy beach holiday. And if you suddenly get tired of lying on the snow-white and surprisingly clean sand, you can rent a jet ski on the island, or explore its surroundings by riding a parachute attached to a high-speed motor boat.

Few people know that it is correct to say snorkeling and not “snorkeling”. This is the name of the process of swimming with a mask and snorkel on the surface of the water

There is only one small hotel on the coral island, and other buildings include only a few bars and a tiny beach restaurant. As a result, the nature on the island of Coral Island has been preserved in such excellent condition that the island is still inhabited by hornbills - large exotic birds that do not like the proximity of people.

Beauty, isn't it?

How to get to Coral Island. Excursion and independent trip.

There are at least 3 ways to get to Coral Island.

Organized excursion. Such excursions are sold everywhere on the island of Phuket and cost an average of 1,000 baht per person. This money, in addition to a trip to the island, also includes lunch and transfer from the hotel to the pier and back.

The local wooden boat is the longtail boat. You can “hire” such a boat at Chalong Pier, the average cost is 1,500 baht for the whole boat. The boat capacity is on average 10 people. In this case, you will have to get to Chalong Pier on your own by taxi, tuk tuk or rented transport, and also take care of your own food on Coral Island.

Local wooden boat - longtail boat

Speed boat or speed boat. You can also “hire” such a boat at Chalong Pier; prices vary widely, and usually range from 6,000 to 9,000 baht. If you are vacationing with a large group, a trip on a speedboat can be not only exciting, but also relatively cheap entertainment. Sometimes even cheaper than buying a group excursion.

Speed boat or speed boat

Beaches and hotels of Coral Island. Coral Island Resort Hotel.

Coral Island has two quality beaches, Long Beach, 800 meters long, and Banana Beach, 200 meters long.

Both beaches are located on the north side of Coral Island, protected by hills from the southwest winds. It is thanks to this location that the sea opposite these beaches is always calm and there is not even a slight wave.

Of the two beaches on Coral Island, Long Beach is noticeably more popular among both local and foreign vacationers. This beach is where almost all excursions arriving on Coral Island land, this beach offers jet ski rentals and parasailing, and the island's only hotel is located on this beach. The second beach, Banana Beach, is less frequently visited by tourists. If you hire a boat yourself, you will have the choice of staying at the quieter and calmer Banana Beach, or landing at the noisier and busier nearby beach. However, even if you land on Long Beach, there is nothing stopping you from walking across the hill that separates the two beaches and stopping at the one you like best.

As mentioned above, there is only one hotel on Coral Island, the Coral Island Resort, and it is located on the eastern edge of Long Beach. This hotel offers its guests accommodation in classic Thai cottages, uncharacteristic for Phuket, but very popular on the rest of the Thai islands, including Lanta Island and the more southern islands, up to Lipe Island. Accommodation at the Coral Island Resort costs from 1,500 baht per night.

Coral Island on the map

If you are too lazy to read the whole article, then I will immediately spoil its main idea. Coral is a very so-so island and if you want paradise within half an hour from Phuket, then it is better to choose or. Swim just a little further, but the rest will be better in all respects. Well, for those who want details, I advise you to read the entire review.

Coral Island on the map of Thailand

As I already wrote, Coral is the closest island to Phuket, where tourists are taken en masse on excursion tours. In a straight line, from Phuket to Coral is only 5 kilometers. Travel time by speedboat is about 5-10 minutes. If you compare it with some Similan or Phi Phi, the difference is simply colossal. But the pleasure of visiting is inversely proportional. 🙂

How to get to Coral Island from Phuket

  • Buy an excursion. This is the simplest and most obvious option suitable for most vacationers. Read more about it below.
  • Go on your own. You can simply get to or on Rawai and ask the local boatmen how much it will cost to arrange a private transfer. This option is more suitable for those who are traveling to Coral for a few days, planning to stay at the Coral Island Resort hotel. By the way, find a review of the hotel below.

Excursions to Coral Island from Phuket: prices and descriptions

An excursion to Coral is the easiest way to visit this island and get maximum impressions without bothering with organizational issues. After all, the tour already includes transfer, meals, guide and other goodies. I recommend buying excursions through a couple of services that I myself used during several months of living in Phuket: (the cheapest place here!) and (many cool individual excursions around Phuket). Any excursion on these sites can be booked online.

TOP 3 excursions to Coral Island from Phuket

  • 1st place- hodgepodge. Hit excursion for those who want to quickly visit all the best nearby islands of Phuket in one day. Because hanging out all day on Coral, in my opinion, is completely pointless, then if you take an excursion here, then this one, where you will have time to see other islands, is much more interesting than Coral itself. The cost of this excursion is from ~1100 baht per person.
  • 2nd place- classic program. If you still want to spend the whole day on a coral island, then this tour is ideal. You will have almost 6 hours of free time, during which you will have time to swim and walk around the island, if you wish. If you take the “VIP program”, you will not be dropped off at Long Beach, where there are crowds of Chinese, but at Banana Beach, which is more secluded. This trip will cost you 1200 baht for standard option and 2000 baht for VIP.
  • 3rd place- two-day tour. For those who live by the principle “walk, walk.” 🙂 There is a hotel of the same name on the island, where you can stay overnight in case of a two-day trip. In general, most tourists leave Coral around 16:00, and after that the place is empty and the atmosphere here becomes completely different, much more peaceful - it would be a shame not to stay. 🙂 This excursion is worth from 1900 baht per person, but food is not included.

Excursion to Coral Island from Phuket - Travel or Die review

So, I went on an excursion to Coral shortly before the New Year 2018. I bought the tour through a Thai friend who offered a pretty good price, about 300 baht lower than the same Alpha Travel, but it turned out that this was a truncated program. :)) Instead of heading back at 16:00, we started at 14:00. Fuck such savings, to be honest. 🙂

1. Departure for Coral Island takes place from . Upon reaching the office of the excursion operator, you will be greeted with juices/waters, coffee/tea and a light snack.

2. When tourists from all over Phuket have finally gathered, you will receive a short briefing from an English-speaking guide, after which you will go to the pier, where you will be loaded onto a speedboat.

3. The island is 5-10 minutes away, so you won’t be able to get enough sleep like on other excursions. 🙂 On the right in the photo you can see another rather interesting island - which I also managed to visit.

4. Landing on the island occurs from the north side, where there are two large beaches. The first can be conditionally called “Chinese Beach”, and the second has the simple name “Banana Beach”.

5. Depending on your operator, you may be unloaded on both the first and second beaches. We were not very lucky - we got the very densely populated “Chinese Beach”. Although you can also meet people of other nationalities here, there are disproportionately more Chinese here.

6. They literally bring it in batches. 🙂 I focus on this not so much because I personally experience some kind of hostility, but more because for many compatriots this is of great importance.

7. Well, the Chinese can be quite cute :)

9. And funny.

10. As for the beach itself, it didn’t make much of an impression on me. In addition, until noon the weather was very cloudy and it generally looked dreary, and when it cleared up, although it became better, it was not impressive against the same background.

11. The prettiest part of the beach is the eastern part, next to the Coral Island Resort hotel. There are many times fewer people here, because... all the Chinese cluster in the central part, and are generally cleaner.

12. The beach surface is quite pleasant white and gray sand.

13. Each excursion organizing company has its own area along the beach where you can drop your things and sit down.

14. But if you want to relax on sun loungers, you will have to rent them for a separate plan - 200 baht. Moreover, it is not a fact that these sun loungers will look at least somewhat sexy. 🙂

15. There are a lot of people, there is garbage. No, not among people, but underfoot.

16. But in general the beach is cleaned.

17. Surprisingly, there is car traffic on such a small island)

18. Cute views.

Banana Beach at Coral

If suddenly you are evicted on the “Chinese” beach, then I strongly advise you to go to the neighboring Banana Beach. In my opinion, it is noticeably more interesting and there are not so many people there.

19. To get to Banana Beach you need to find a path through the jungle. I personally wasn’t able to do this the first time, due to my innate inattention :) But in general it’s not difficult to do. Walk along the shore to the east, past the bungalows of the Coral Island Resort hotel until you reach the jungle. The desired path will appear in front of you a little higher up the hillside separating the beaches. If you look at the photo, it’s a little to the right of the tourists standing on the stones.

20. The path between the beaches is about 400 meters and is quite well trodden, but it is better to wear more or less comfortable shoes.

21. Because This is a natural jungle, so you can easily meet unpleasant representatives of tropical fauna.

22. But the journey is worth it! 10 minutes through the jungle and you will see the best beach on the island. A much smaller number of people immediately attract attention.

23. The beach is very small - less than 200 meters, but quite good.

24. The truth is that the sewer pipe that goes far into the water is a little confusing :))

26. Pontoon pier for those arriving on the island.

27. From the air.

28. View from Banana Beach towards the main beach.

29. These are sun loungers.

30. In the eastern part of Banana Beach you can discover a photogenic pile of stones.

31. True, it is permanently occupied for photo sessions with fat wood lice, which are teeming here. Jumping on those moving rocks is a bit gross.

Lunch on Coral Island

33. During the excursion to Coral, it will inevitably come time for lunch. And I can’t say that lunch on the Coral is somehow different, for better or worse, from lunches on other excursions. All the same standard set of Thai dishes, the only thing about which we can say is that they are simple, but edible and even tasty.

34. A girl with Provencal on her face at the distribution of chicken.

35. For dessert, standard pineapples/watermelons.

36. My lunch.

Trekking on Coral Island

37. If lying on the beach all day and snorkeling doesn’t seem like the most interesting idea to you and your soul requires exploration, then, to my great surprise, it is here, albeit in very modest quantities. Once you get to the farthest part of Banana Beach, you will see a trail going uphill to the right.

38. Where will this path lead you? There will be several key points. One of them is an observation deck with not the most expressive, but still some kind of views.

40. Moving further along the path you can reach the easternmost point of the island. Here you have to go down a rather steep slope, but there are ropes strung between the trees for insurance, so the event is quite safe.

41. View from the easternmost point :)

42. All the skepticism from the value of contemplating these views on the face of your humble servant :)

43. The last interesting point can be found if you go back a little along the path, but go at the fork not to the beach, but along the slope along the southern coast of the island. Another semi-extreme descent awaits you there, overcoming which I had a small incident. Moving at a leisurely pace and holding onto the ropes, I suddenly heard the cracking of branches on the right side of the slope. Judging by the growing sound, something was rapidly moving in my direction, and it seemed that this something was simply rolling head over heels, sweeping away everything in its path. To be honest, walking through the jungle alone is already a little creepy, but at such moments the bricks just ask to come out. And yet, something told me that I couldn’t meet anything larger and more dangerous than a monitor lizard on this island, so I just stood and waited for this unknown creature to appear before me. Imagine my surprise when, a few seconds later, a huge black mountain goat jumped out of the thicket onto the slope and stared at me in the same bewilderment as I did at him! For probably half a minute we looked into each other’s eyes without moving, after which I decided that it was better to slowly retreat so that the goat could go on about his business. In general, keep this in mind. 🙂

44. After the goat disappeared from sight, I continued the descent at the end of which I was greeted by a deserted and rocky, not exactly a beach, but rather just a piece of land of unknown purpose. 🙂

46. Having examined everything that time allowed me, I went back to Banana Beach. Along the way I met a couple of toucans.

Entertainment on Coral Island

47. Of course, first of all, the island has plenty of various water activities. There is snorkeling and diving, which is provided by the local dive center.

48. And banana riding.

49. And parasailing.

IMPORTANT! I note that you can take an excursion with water activities already included, it will be cheaper - see the section about excursions to Coral Island above.

50. As for non-water entertainment, the island has a popular Zipline attraction.

51. This is a series of platforms in the jungle, between which you need to move while hanging on a belay.

Hotel Coral Island Resort: review, prices, booking

For those who want to stay longer in this place, there is the opportunity to book the only hotel on the island - Coral Island Resort. I advise you to book on Agoda, they consistently have the lowest prices in Thailand.

In general, there are quite mixed reviews about the hotel itself online. Some people categorically do not like it, others believe that the shabbyness of the hotel does not interfere with enjoying a secluded holiday - after 16 all tourists leave and you can enjoy peace and quiet. Let's take a walk around the territory and find out how everything works here.

52. You could be in his place. 🙂 In general, bungalows are located both directly on the first line and deep in the forest.

53. There are both separate bungalows and semi-detached buildings.

54. Hotel card.

55. Beach in front of the hotel. As I wrote above, this is the best part of the main beach of the island. There are many times fewer people here than in the central part.

57. Path between bungalows.

58. Hotel restaurant. Judging by the reviews - expensive. 🙁

In general, purely visually from the outside the hotel looks quite good, but many tourists complain that the interiors inside are far from fresh and the hotel is crying for renovation.

Coral Island - review and rating Travel or Die

So, at the end of the review, I will summarize. In my opinion, Coral Island is not the most interesting island. Yes, there is clean water, an abundance of fish (so they say), but that’s all. Lots of people, not the most outstanding nature. The beach is quite ordinary by Thai standards, nothing supernatural. If you want to stay here for the night, then there is only one hotel on the island, there is no choice, unlike the same one, where there are very cheap bungalows right on the shore, as well as luxury 5* hotels.

In short, I don’t want to frankly dissuade you from visiting Coral Island, because... many tourists quite like it, but to me, having visited most of the islands surrounding Phuket, it seemed one of the most unpretentious. 🙂

Rating for Coral Island: 7/10.
