In May 1935, LAPE (Lineas Aereas Postales Españolas), the predecessor of the current airline Iberia, was created. And two months later, in August, the first regular flight was launched from Palma de Mallorca Son Sant Joan airport to Madrid, with an intermediate stop in Valencia. A year later, the Palma - Barcelona route appeared, and three years later several more from Lufthansa and Iberia.

We rented a car from HERTZ, taking advantage of a special offer from Ryanair on the airline’s website. We ordered a small car, the Hundai i10, not being fans of the Korean car industry, and not even having a clue what it was. I got a Hyundai i20. A car is like a car, simple, small, but economical.
The HERTZ office, like the offices of other renta-car companies, is located on level “0” of the passenger terminal, immediately behind the arrivals area. Only this “immediately” did not happen right away, I already wrote that the passenger terminal of Palma de Mallorca Airport is simply huge. We walked for a long time, following the signs. The HERTZ agent at the counter must be provided with your license (ours + international), a reservation voucher (the reservation has been paid) and a bank account card. The whole ceremony of receiving the car took about ten minutes, no more. We signed the contract, paid an additional €9.0 for SCDW (zero deductible) and received the keys and the number of the place where the car was waiting for us.
The Palma de Mallorca Airport parking lot is as huge as the passenger terminal. It is located opposite the latter, you can walk, or you can ride on a moving path. We didn’t care, but it was convenient with luggage. The renta-car parking lot occupies the entire lower floor. At HERTZ alone we counted more than 100 spaces for cars. Along with the keys, we received a parking ticket for leaving the parking lot and a map of the island of Mallorca.
We drove around the island using a navigator, but it was not a problem to leave Palma de Mallorca Airport following the signs. From the parking lot there is one exit road towards the motorway, then near the motorway you come to a ring with six exits, two of which go to the motorway (in different directions), the rest are local roads.
Returning the car was also no problem. You can refuel at the REPSOL gas station almost at the Palma de Mallorca Airport terminal. The gas station is indicated in the navigator; one of the exits from the above-mentioned ring leads to it. Returning to the parking lot, you need to park your car in any free HERTZ parking space and wait for an employee. After inspecting the car, the keys are handed over to a special HERTZ booth in the parking lot. There are usually crowds of people there, but there is no need to stand in line to hand over the keys.
The car cost €20.88 per day rental, €1.0 TPW, €1.0 CDW is standard, plus €9.0 surcharge for SCDW. Let me remind you that for standard CDW insurance, HERTZ’s deductible is €670.0, with an additional payment for SCDW of €0.0. Additionally, they charged €56.39 for a tank of gasoline and added 18.0% VAT on everything else. There was no fee for returning the car elsewhere, apparently in Mallorca you can only return the car at Palma de Mallorca Airport, with no options. At the time of writing, the money for the tank of gas has not yet been returned to us and it is too early to sum up the results, we are waiting.

The arrival, apart from the fact that the plane was delayed in Valencia with a departure for one hour, and the territory of Palma de Mallorca Airport is very large, was not marked with anything special. We arrived, boarded, got off, went to the terminal building in the arrivals area on level “0”. Then they walked for a long, long, long time along long, long corridors to the main exit. There we rented a car and drove off.
But on departure you can dwell in more detail. Those who arrive at Palma de Mallorca Airport by bus or taxi apparently end up directly in the departure area, at level “2” and it is easier for them to deal with the terminal. After handing over the car to the HERTZ agent, we found ourselves on the main square in front of the passenger terminal at level “0”. And this is the arrival area and there are completely no signs (pictograms, arrows, inscriptions, schedule boards...) regarding departures.
Finally, after some wandering around the arrivals area of Palma de Mallorca Airport, we saw an elevator to the upper levels and this saved us. True, even having risen to level “2” we did not immediately get to the necessary check-in counters, but there was already a board with the flight schedule and then it was a matter of technology. There are a lot of check-in counters, about two hundred. The Ryanair check-in counters are at the top of the list (I think from 11 to 17 or something like that), so after climbing vertically I had to cross the terminal horizontally. It was good to have some time.
Procedure visa-check at Palma de Mallorca Airport took place at the far right of the Ryanair check-in counters. There were few people like us here, so the procedure was quick. True, the Spaniards, both passengers and airport workers, spend a lot of time talking, they love to talk, nothing can be done.
The only downside I would note is the lack of information about the boarding gate number by the time visa-check is completed and baggage is dropped off; only the zone is known. Given the huge size of Palma de Mallorca Airport, this is a little annoying. The boarding gates are located in four zones - separate modules of the terminal, designated by the letters “A”, “B”, “C” and “D” and their total number is about 100.
To get to the security check area before departure, you need to take the escalator to the next level, marked “4” on the terminal diagram. For some unclear reasons, at the passenger terminal of Palma de Mallorca Airport there are only even levels “0”-“2”-“4”-“6” and no odd ones.
In the security check area at Palma de Mallorca airport, we first encountered a special device that checks shoes. The frame through which you pass during inspection was apparently set to be more sensitive. But now you don’t need to take off your shoes, and after checking with a hand-held scanner, you are taken to a special unit, in the center of which you need to place your foot for inspection. It was interesting.
Our landing module was under the letter “D” - judging by the diagram, it would take at least 9 minutes to get to it, however, if it was module “C” then it would be 11 minutes to get to it. This is, of course, not London Stansted, where you need to take a special electric train to get to some gates, but it’s also a lot. On the way to the gates of Palma de Mallorca Airport you will not get bored - shops, shops, cafes, restaurants. The only annoying thing is the lack of information about the exact boarding gate number. We had to sit at the information board for some time and wait until a message appeared about which of the nineteen gates in zone “D” was ours.
The landing itself, like everything related to Ryanair, went quickly. We boarded the plane and flew to Valencia. The flight time, by the way, is about 30 minutes.
These are our impressions of Palma de Mallorca Son Sant Joan Airport. As they say, fly with Ryanair, you won’t regret it.
When I landed at Mallorca airport, I was simply amazed by its size. This huge building with panoramic windows inspired hope for excellent service. “Wow!” - I screamed after getting off the plane. Although, on the other hand, this is not surprising, because there is a large flow of tourists there, almost all of them fly to the island.
But the positive emotions practically ended there and became quiet. I ran into trouble with not very good staff. If you know English, then it will be simple and easy for you. But if there is a complete absence of foreign language, you will have to explain everything on your fingers, and the workers there are not very friendly, and also slow.
As for the internal organization of the airport, in the middle it does not seem as luxurious as from the outside.
For example, I didn’t like the fact that they didn’t screen people when entering the airport; you can bring whatever you want. Although, on the other hand, when going through security when boarding a flight, they are asked to even take off shoes with thick soles. Some kind of ambiguous attitude towards security.
I also didn’t like the fact that huge passages were built to the passport control area; I was tired of carrying my bag.
The toilets were disappointing, they were a bit dirty, and I also didn’t have enough soap.
Well, a little about the infrastructure of the airport itself:
- a bunch of clothing stores, Spanish-made cosmetics (my favorite boutique was “Mango”);
- a huge duty free zone with cheap prices (an order of magnitude lower than in Russia);
- several cafes, although they are not of a high standard;
