Kamala Beach in Phuket is a good place to relax with children. Description and our detailed review with photos

After Phuket's most famous and crowded beach, Patong, Kamala's long, wide beach will be a real breath of fresh air. Beach lined with picturesque casuarinas ideal for swimming and relaxing. Even during the rainy season there are people here - though mostly local residents, rather than tourists trying to surf the stronger waves.

Compared to other cities and towns in Phuket, Kamala is more like small traditional Thai village. Of course, there is also tourism infrastructure(where would we be today), but you won’t have to go far to find a secluded place to relax where you can enjoy authentic Thai food in a modest restaurant, frequented mostly by locals rather than tourists (which is an indicator of quality and inexpensive food). This resort region occupies a special place. Former Muslim fishing village suddenly found itself in great demand among tourists. And all because on a crowded island, it was Kamala Beach (Phuket) that turned out to be the most suitable for a relaxing holiday, as if somewhere on Samui or Koh Phangan. It especially attracts travelers who come not for nightlife and dubious pleasures a la Pattaya. It is located in the western part of the island, north of bustling Patong. There are not so many luxury hotels here, mostly “three” and “four” hotels. But let's talk about everything in order.

How to get to Kamala

Arriving in Phuket by international plane or transferring to a taxi or minibus. The latter will cost half as much - about four hundred baht. It’s even cheaper to get to the capital of the island by bus, and from there take another flight to Kamala Beach. Phuket Town is a good transport hub connected to almost every corner of the island. The only problem is that buses run quite rarely, about once an hour. They are blue in color and travel through Kamala and Surin to Bang Tao. The distance to the airport and to Phuket Town is approximately the same - about twenty kilometers.

Why do people go to Kamala Beach?

Phuket is so popular among tourists that it is quite difficult to find a cozy place where the locals are not too spoiled by vacationers and the prices are not so high. But this is where all these bonuses are combined, and there is practically no downside. Therefore, people who stay for a long vacation - at least three to four weeks - flock here. And if during the season the south of this resort can be filled with people - due to the influx of people from Patong - then its northern part still remains a protected area. Although the resort's infrastructure is not very developed, most hotels have everything you need. It is also a paradise for divers. After all, Kamala Beach (Phuket) boasts beautiful coral reefs located not very far from the coast.

Sea holiday

Kamala is good for swimming and sunbathing. The beach is quite long - it stretches for one and a half to two kilometers along a very picturesque bay covered with palm trees, so there is enough space for everyone. and small. The descent into the water is gentle, but the waves are not very strong. Sun beds and deck chairs are a bit expensive. They are mainly concentrated in the south and center of the resort. There they cost about two hundred baht a day. There is a developed tourist infrastructure here, many water activities and massage parlors right on the shore. A little further you can go to any beach bar, order something - and sit on their inventory as long as you want. But in the very north you will have to make do with your own or hotel beach towels. But there are almost no people here, and the water is very clean and clear. This is because in the north of Kamala beach there are almost no different skis, bananas and scooters. But do not forget that during the rainy season it is dangerous to swim here, because very strong undercurrents begin.

What else is there to do here?

Firstly, this resort is famous throughout Phuket theme park Fantasea, where people come from all over the island. Grandiose performances are staged there, with the participation of not only hundreds of people, but also animals. There is also a wonderful restaurant “Golden Kinnaria”. His amazing buffet is legendary. To get there, you need to buy an entrance ticket to the park and pay extra for visiting. Secondly, one of the fashionable entertainments in Kamala is a parachute flight to view the resort from above. And if you don’t dare, you can climb to the top of Khao Phonthurat hill. There's a great one there Observation deck, from where you can see the entire Kamala beach, what you can do from there turns out to be amazing. After all, the resort is covered tropical forests climbing the rocks.

Where to eat

Even if there are no such grandiose shopping centers with food courts as in Patong, their absence is more than compensated for by various stalls with delicious and fresh Thai food. In addition, the main street of the resort is replete with restaurants and cafes where you can eat for both big money and not so much. And the beach itself is full of makashnits and other peddlers. French and Italian cuisine is very popular in Kamala, so if you have the budget and want to eat from a real chef, try places like La Carbonara, Basilico and White Orchid. Especially delicious seafood is prepared in the establishments “Rockfish”, “Sweet Dreams” and “Ponds”.

What and where to buy

As already mentioned, there are no large shopping centers here, but there are small shops everywhere. Tourists buy here everything they need for their vacation - mattresses, towels, mats, flip-flops, swimsuits, etc. Souvenirs, simple clothes and shoes are also sold at affordable prices. Since Kamala Beach (Phuket) - reviews confirm this - is the Muslim part of Thailand, the main market here is open on Fridays. Come and you won't regret it. You won’t find so many goodies, including dried exotic fruits, as well as branded items at ridiculous prices anywhere else.

What to see

In the south of the resort there is a rather interesting Buddhist temple with beautiful modern murals illustrating the life of Gautama. Nearby there is a cozy park with a memorial to the victims of the 2004 tsunami. It is known that the village of Kamala was wiped off the face of the earth by this terrible disaster, and then completely rebuilt. In addition to the Fantasea park, where a theatrical and circus performance about the ancient Prince Kamala takes place with dancing, various special effects and a demonstration of ancient Thai magic, you can visit other shows that take place in the Palace of the Elephants. And on Fridays, the most famous bar in the area, Skila, organizes a disco with professional DJs.

Resort Hotels

Hotels on Kamala Beach (Phuket) are mainly located along Beach Road. Unlike most resorts on the island, there is no road between the local hotels and the sea, so here you can find hotels on the first line from the sea. Of the luxurious five-star palaces, the most popular are Aiyara Resort, Cape Sienna Hotel and Villas and Naka Phuket. Ayara Kamala is located on a hill, quite far from the beach, but its rooms offer beautiful views, and there is a free shuttle to the sea.

But "Cape Sienna", on the contrary, is located on the ocean. Therefore, all of its rooms and villas (some have not only their own kitchens and private pools, but even wine cellars) overlook the sea.

"Fours" are usually located across the road from the beach. The best of them are Aquamarine and Swissotel. The latter is interesting because it is located not too far from Phuket shopping center“Jangseylon”, and besides, it has its own mini-water park.

Hotels on Kamala Beach (Phuket, line 1) are also three-star. There are few of them, they are simple, but very functional. An example is the Kamala Beach Inn. There are many cheap guesthouses and apartments at the resort, such as Tara Hotel, Baan Hostel and so on.

Thailand, Kamala Beach (Phuket): reviews

This corner of the island is very popular among couples, lovers and young people seeking solitude. The beach is more loved by the French, Germans and other Europeans; there are not very many Russians here. But those who have visited this region call Kamala best place in Phuket. There are few tourists, clear water, white clean sand, and there is everything you need. There is a lot of shade from the palm trees that grow everywhere. There are even semi-wild beaches where you hardly meet people. Besides, it doesn't get boring here. People rest mostly decently. Reviews of hotels in Phuket (Kamala Beach) are very positive. Staying in five-star hotels is called elite holiday, complete relaxation and spending time in luxury style. But there are also excellent reviews about cheaper hotels, especially about the ratio of price, quality and services. In some hotels good view at sea, in others - all conditions have been created for a romantic vacation or holiday with children. Come!

Kamala Beach ( Kamala Beach) — best beach in Phuket in our opinion. Our preferences do not always coincide, but we both liked Kamala at first sight. Kamala has a calm sea, pleasant sand, few tourists and all the necessary infrastructure. We were lucky enough to live on Kamala for a whole month, and during this time we did not get tired of the beach.

Kamala Beach, Phuket

Kamala Beach: description and impressions

What a beauty! - the first thoughts that come to mind when approaching the beach. And what blue water is here! There are no waves, you can swim! We take off our flip-flops - the sand is so soft and fine, it’s as if you’re walking on fluff. And there are so few tourists! I've been on the beach for 10 minutes already, and I haven't heard a single Russian word yet.. Is this really Phuket??

Kamala beach. Phuket

Kamala is a great place to stay in Phuket

The water is clean, although not always crystal clear. For a month I never touched any debris in the water. Usually there are no waves at all or they are very small, only on some days there are medium waves on which you can jump. Sometimes you can feel a bite in the water - a feature of all Phuket beaches. We still don’t understand who bites, small plankton or tiny jellyfish.

Entry into the water is pleasant and smooth, the bottom is sandy without stones and shells. I would even say that the approach and bottom here are simply ideal. To a depth “up to the neck” of 30-40 meters. There are specially fenced safe swimming areas where lifeguards are on duty and boats are not allowed to enter. But at low tide the water goes away and swimming is complicated by the fact that it becomes very shallow.

Waves on Kamala

Few Russian tourists

There are generally few tourists on Kamala, compared to the most famous beaches - Kata, Karon and Patong. The resort is not very popular among Russian-speaking holidaymakers. When we arrived here, I heard Russian speech only on the third day. And I thought that Phuket is the second Pattaya in terms of the number of compatriots. Mostly Europeans, Germans and British, and the Chinese, of course, vacation here. There is also an occasional American accent.

At the end of November, with the onset of the high season, more Russians appeared. Now on the beach, nationalities are mixed in approximately equal proportions. However, according to my observations, the Russians on this beach are not some kind of redneck, but rather decent people. There was no such thing as anyone swearing all over the beach, sorting things out, or staggering around drunk. On this beach there is no shame for the fatherland

How to sunbathe? Sunbed with umbrellas and shade from palm trees

Phuket now has sun loungers again. An umbrella is placed between them. The amenities are not free. Prices seem to be 200 baht for 2 sun loungers and an umbrella. If the price has changed, write in the comments.

These are the homemade sun loungers

If you don’t want to pay for a sun lounger, you can always sit anywhere on the beach on your own towel. Until about lunchtime there will be shade under the palm trees, so umbrellas are not really needed. The main thing is not to lie down under a palm tree with coconuts. On most palm trees they are cut off, but for some reason some palm trees are not touched.

Relaxing in the shade of palm trees

Fun on the beach

Entertainment options include jet skis, banana boats and parasailing. 30 minutes on a scooter costs 1,500 baht. We didn’t find out about the banana and the parachute, but I think it’s worth flying just as much. There are also several massage points in the middle part of the beach.

Cafes and restaurants

There are several beach cafes right on the sand, which are open from 10 am until late in the evening. In the middle part there are several bars and cheap street cafes “for locals”, where tourists eat mainly. The prices are not particularly different from ordinary Thai cafes, well, maybe a little more expensive, because they are on the first line.

Beach cafes

Cheap Thai cafes

There are always several shops near Thai cafes, where we often bought pancakes with banana for 40 baht. It's a little more expensive than on the main road, where the same pancake costs 30 baht. By the way, you can eat in these cafes with your own drinks. I don't know about the liquor, but we used to bring our own soda from 7-Eleven.

Lots of traders

The traders are unobtrusive, you just need to say no or ignore them. But they can quickly get bored with the fact that they come up to you 5 times a day with their elephants, scarves and fake watches.

Where can I order a transfer from the airport?

We use the service - KiwiTaxi
We ordered a taxi online and paid by card. We were met at the airport with a sign with our name on it. We were taken to the hotel in a comfortable car. You've already talked about your experience In this article

The process of hilling tourists

Deserted beach

In the far right corner of Kamala near the mountain is the famous Novotel. Between central beach and the Novotel beach stretches across a deserted, semi-wild area. Here you can position yourself so that there will not be a single tourist within a radius of 100 meters from you

Novotel Beach

Having passed wild beach, we get to the beach hotel Novotel. This is a small corner lagoon, so the sea is always calm. Casuarina trees grow on the shore, providing shade and emitting a pleasant pine scent. Great place for swimming with children. But we didn’t really like swimming here, since it’s very shallow.

Low tides

Low tides occur every day, sometimes quite strong. I find swimming at low tide somehow unpleasant. Usually the tide is always high around 10-12 am, and the low tide begins around lunchtime. By evening the water rises again. Sometimes low tide occurs early in the morning. I remotely determined whether the tide was low or high by the water level in the stinking river that flows into the sea. At high tide the rivers fill up and dry up at low tide.

Low tide. Photo in the left non-swimable part of the beach

Stinky rivers

Like all Phuket beaches, Kamala has one unpleasant feature - 3 stinking rivers flow into the sea. While swimming, you don’t think about it, and it’s not noticeable that there are any impurities floating in the water or unpleasant odors in the air. Maybe the current carries you away from the beach. But every time you pass by such a river, you try not to inhale its pungent, fetid aroma once again.

Stinking river at high tide

By the way, in this temple, which is in the photo above, we recently celebrated a big Thai celebration.

The left corner of the beach, where one of the rivers flows, is used for boat parking.

Sunsets

I would like to end the article with something more positive than a description of stinking rivers. Kamala has great sunsets. To enjoy the sunset as much as possible, I advise you to go towards Novotel, because in the central part of the beach the sunset will be blocked by the mountain.

Kamala Map

The following diagram shows useful points: swimming areas, 7-elevens, the only toilet (10 baht), cafes, and mini-markets with beach accessories and souvenirs:

How to get to Kamala

On public transport in principle, you can get there cheaper, but it will take longer, since you first have to take a minibus across the entire island to Phuket Town (100 baht), and then change to a Kamala bus (40 baht). Total 140 baht per person. If you know your way around Phuket well, you can take a shortcut, get off right after the Heroes Monument, cross the road and catch a bus to Kamala. But keep in mind that buses only run until 17-18 hours. - no longer relevant! Now there is a bus in Phuket that can take you to Kamala for 150 baht per person.

From other beaches: if you have your own transport, getting there will not be difficult. Just follow the signs north of Phuket along the coast. From Patong it takes about 15 minutes. From Karon and Kata go through Patong.

If you don’t have a bike or a car, you can get there on a Smart Bus. Or by bus with a transfer through Phuket town. You get to the final one (Market bus station) - at the beginning of the street there will be buses to Kamala. As a rule, they are always written in English Bangtao - Surin - Kamala. Travel time is about 1 hour or more, as there may be traffic jams. The fare is 40 baht. These buses look something like this:

You can also get there by taxi. A taxi from Patong costs 400 baht. But, you can bargain with taxi drivers. We went once for 300, another time for 350 ($10).

This time, the room we stayed in was not very well cleaned at first. To be honest, we were immediately surprised! Earlier to return to the room, cleanliness, everything is in place, etc. After the first day of cleaning, we thought that we had imagined it. Plus, the traditional cream and coffee have not yet been delivered. I asked the staff to correct this situation. Looks like they reported it. The next day, it happened again exactly. Then I was forced to contact the reception, after which they arranged a meeting with the manager. I explained the situation to her, she went with me to the room, where she saw confirmation of my claims. We must pay tribute, the reaction was timely! Our room probably hasn't been cleaned like this since its first day of use. In the subsequent days of our stay, everything was just really polished, arranged, filled and supplemented. Another issue that I immediately discussed with the manager was the issue of replacing my three breakfasts, with an additional payment for dinner. Let me explain. I went on a dive, so three of my breakfasts included in the price of my stay were burned. I offered to exchange them with an additional payment for dinners for my wife, who was staying at the hotel. I was given a refusal. I believe that this is not serious and such an issue can, in principle, be resolved without any difficulties. This is the treatment of the hotel management. I hope that next time, in case of an appeal, it will be resolved.

This is the FOURTH time in a row that we have been to this hotel and that speaks for itself! All previous reviews are here earlier. Everything is good: territory, five swimming pools, three bars, two restaurants. Cleanliness in the area. We note positively, but we saw soft, non-wet mattresses on the sunbeds. I already wrote about this and told the staff earlier, it was not entirely comfortable to lie on the sagging sunbeds. Now it's normal. The food deserves special praise and its quality does not change with each visit! Again, having your own private beach, fenced off by water, is positive. Zero line to the sea. Thank you......

We paid a deposit when checking into the hotel. And after eviction, the balance of the deposit should have been returned to the card within 14 days. But the money never came to us! There are approximately 2,500 baht left in the account (5,000 rubles!). We already called the hotel, they said contact your bank, which we naturally already did, the hotel simply ignores email! It turns out the hotel stole 2,500 baht from us. This ruined the whole impression of the staff's work, I would really like to get our money back!!!

The hotel itself is good, I enjoyed my stay. We can’t say anything bad about the hotel itself, but!

We have already stayed in this hotel 3 times since 2012 for 24 days and each time it gets worse. The rooms should be reconstructed - (goosebumps and cockroaches were present in every room where we lived). The hotel is at full capacity - there are no sunbeds for everyone, cocktails at the bar are diluted (and this was only noticed in 2019). The price of accommodation is rising every year. On the next balcony they smoke so much that there is a complete smoke screen in your room. Massage at the hotel - depending on your luck. Sometimes it’s lazy and nothing. Cleaning the room is ridiculous even to describe. (in 24 days - more than one general. Nobody even thinks about the fact that the railings on the cormorant need to be wiped from bird droppings. The electrical system is very strangely organized. If you turn on the light, the TV goes out. ((Every year there are a lot of people on the beach people and the fact that we loved this beach and hotel so much will disappear. The most interesting thing is that the compliment from the hotel was fruit only once. In previous years, at least 3. And then. Change the shower gel and soap - it smells terrible.

My husband and I stayed from November 1 to November 14, 2019 in room 6302. The room overlooks the pool and mountains, quiet, secluded. Room cleaning is at the highest level. Tea and coffee sets, as well as water, were replenished daily (the staff collects and places used glass bottles new water to replace). In the hotel bottles you will find shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, hand soap, body lotion, in boxes you will find toothbrushes, a shaving machine, a comb, shower caps, cotton swabs, and in the closet there are slippers and bathrobes. The hotel has a luxurious breakfast, including a lot of fruits, pastries, and delicious yoghurts. A massage at the hotel cost 300-400 baht (by the time we left, cheaper than on the beach), manicure - 250 baht, pedicure - 300 baht. Taxi to the airport - 700 baht. There is a shuttle from the hotel to Patong 3 times a day, 100 baht one way, 150 baht round trip. The restaurant by the sea organizes festive evenings with a show program and live music, a table for two is approximately 2500 baht. There is a pedestrian path between the hotel and the sea, to the left is the village and the 7/11 store, to the right are restaurants and cafes (I highly recommend Lilla Island). On Friday and Monday (from approximately 14 to 19 hours) there is an outdoor market near the hotel where you can buy fruits, souvenirs, delicacies, and clothes

Kamala Beach – this beach can be called urban in the full sense of the word. It is located in the central part of Phuket island on its western side and to the north famous beach. In fact, this is the coast of the town of the same name, consisting not only of tourist buildings, but also of the houses of ordinary residents.

Description of the beach

This beach is not small, its length is about 2 km, while its width is very narrow (20 - 30 m). For a long time, Kamala was a quiet and peaceful place. The beach served as a pier for fishing boats and for Thai people to relax. There were very few tourists there. However, in recent years More and more often you can meet older people who have chosen this quiet and peaceful place as a second home.

This is understandable, all the benefits of civilization are at hand, and at the same time the sea is just a stone's throw away. In addition to those who moved here, there are now many package tourists here.

The sand on Kamala is white, similar to grains of salt. On beach line There are many hotels and the beach area next to them belongs to them. Accordingly, sand quality and purity can vary significantly.

The beach is popular, but much less noisy than or.

In my opinion, it is somewhat similar to , that is, it is relatively calm and a little village-like, but there are enough people. Cleanliness in Kamala is also okay. Only in the southern “wild” part can there be a lot of garbage.

Entering the water, depth and waves

The southern part of the beach is not suitable for beach holiday. The shore there is rather dirty, there are a lot of stones and cobblestones. Local fishermen often park their boats there. Also on the southern part there is a rather flat entrance, you can walk for a long time to the depths. And in the central and northern parts, where there are umbrellas and sun loungers, the entrance, the closer to the north, the less flat.

The wide line of Kamala Bay favors the winds that create big waves. To the north of the beach they rise to heights of up to 3 m, and approaching the shore, they come across a network of underwater reefs and rise even higher. During the monsoon season, red warning flags appear on the beach. Swimming at this time is dangerous. Strong waves can hit you and carry you far from the shore.

Sunbeds and shade

There are not many sunbeds on the beach. In the most visited areas of the beach (center and north), you can rent a sunbed with an umbrella for the standard 100 baht. Hotels that have their own private areas of Kamala often put out additional rows of sun loungers that are available only to guests of the hotel.

The beach can change greatly in different seasons. In high season, the entire beach from the center to the north is one large field of sun loungers. There are a lot of people swimming in the water, the waves are quiet and smooth. IN low season There are few sunbeds, even after half an hour of walking you may not find one.

There is practically no natural shade on the beach, only if it is near the outer row of sunbeds adjacent to the trees, and in the first half of the day, when the sun is not yet so high.

South Kamala (left)

Infrastructure

The beach itself has all the Thai attributes of a beach. Massage parlors, tent cafes, mini-markets and hundreds of sellers of cheap souvenirs, clothing, and beach accessories. There you can not only shop, but also rent a scuba diving device and explore the northern reefs.

In addition, according to many surfers, steep waves are an excellent source of adrenaline, but only experienced specialists should conquer them. If you are an excellent surfer, then Kamala will be your Everest during the wave season. Many available boats, boats and kayaks are also waiting for you on this beach.

Some tourists rent a boat and sail to one of the neighboring, more attractive beaches. But you can ride not only on boats, but also behind them with a parachute or on a banana boat.

Holidays on Kamala are not limited to typical entertainment. Yoga schools are available at the hotels (meditate on one of the Kamala stones in the background rising sun costs a lot), real Thai massage salons and Thai cuisine chef training schools, where they will really teach you how to cook Thai food perfectly.

The combination of beach and civilization gives undeniable advantages to Kamala. You can walk around the village, go to the Friday Market, where there is a large selection of goods not only beach-themed. There is also a mini Tesco and a small Big C.

A trip to the Kamala Temple will also not leave you indifferent, but the most interesting place is (Phuket FantaSea) - this is an incredible and biggest show on the island. In my opinion, it is more intended for children, although adults will also find it interesting.

Hundreds of artists, elephants and other exotic animals will tell you interesting story under the arches of the evening sky. But the Fantasy of Phuket is not limited to performance. She claims to be the most big park entertainment in Phuket. There are many cafes, attractions, fun carnival-like games and, of course, shops.

The architecture of the Elephant Palace and other buildings is pleasing to the eye and stunning. The park itself is filled with helpful employees who will take care of you (they will tell you where the most interesting entertainment and other joys of life). This park is located in the central part of the beach, just 300 m from the shore.

Houses and hotels on the beach

All coastline(1 lane) is occupied by expensive hotels, if we are talking about the central part of the beach. And hotels occupy the entire space from the shore to the main road, which goes far from the shore. In the northern part of the beach there are almost no hotels along the shore; instead, there are vacant lots surrounded by fences (future hotels?). And there the hotels will all be across the road from the beach, and their density is also low.

In terms of prices - the further from the coast, the cheaper, which is logical. You can even find a hostel starting from 200 baht per bed. On the other hand, luxury hotels, whose rooms offer an unsurpassed view of Kamala Bay, can cost more than 15 thousand baht per day.

In addition to price, an important factor is appearance. Here Kamala also provides a large selection. There are modern grotesque hotels made of glass and white stone, and there are cozy mini-coves-pools with wooden houses that form their own special system.
