The travel company Travel Plan "DSBW Travel Collection" will organize a variety of tours to Portugal in 2019 - one of our favorite destinations. Portugal is a wonderful country for a relaxing holiday and interesting travels. The destination is relatively expensive, mainly due to air travel to Lisbon.

We specialize more in excursion tours, of which I would like to highlight our wonderful tour first of all "Iberian Voyage" from the DSBW Travel Collection. This tour includes visits to two countries - Spain and Portugal and is relatively inexpensive due to the more economical flight to Spain.

Portugal differs from many other countries in its calmness and tranquility in everything. Even the songs are somehow calm and melodic. Portugal is also distinguished by excellent service, an abundance of attractions and the absence of “tourist extras”. And also a calm, cool climate, very fresh air from the ocean and excellent cuisine that could easily compete with its more famous neighbors. But the Portuguese don’t argue - they just cook deliciously.

There is a lot to see in Portugal. In addition to Lisbon, Porto and the Algarve, numerous palaces and monasteries are of interest: Alcobaca, Estoril, Braga, Guimaraes, Caimbra, Fatima, Batalha, Sintra, Obidos, Mafra and much more. By the way, Portugal is an excellent option to combine an educational holiday with a beach holiday, going from Moscow to the resorts of the Lisbon Riviera, Algarve and Madeira.

As a specialist in Portugal, we will help diversify your trip in 2019 with interesting routes and holidays in Portugal.

Breakfast in the hotel. Departure from the hotel with things - transfer to Lisbon - accommodation at a hotel in Lisbon.

Coimbra - This is an old university town, thoroughly imbued with a unique student atmosphere. The university, built in 1290, is located on a mountain, so it is clearly visible from the embankment. The historical center of the city is a tangle of narrow ancient streets in which it is easy to get lost. However, the residents of the town are very friendly, and more than a third of them are associated with the university. It should be noted that the University of Coimbra is the oldest university in Europe, and it still operates to this day.
You'll see the magnificent Romanesque Cathedral of Se Vel and the Augustinian monastery of Santa Cruz, which dates back to the 12th century. King Alfonso Henriques I and his son Sancho I are buried there. If you go to Coimbra during the holiday, you are sure to meet many people in original cloaks with distinctive faculty ribbons.
Underground riches of Portugal: Piggy Bank cave with coins
Among the many attractions of Portugal there are rare objects, which include the GrutasdaMoeda cave. The name is translated into Russian as “piggy bank with coins.”
The legend of the GrutasdaMoeda cave
Local residents tell an old legend about the robbery and murder of a rich man by robbers, which was a common occurrence in those troubled times. However, that time the bandits chose the wrong place, or time, or object of their criminal enterprise. Be that as it may, the robbers did not manage to profit: they threw the lifeless body of their victim from the rocks and in their haste dropped the bag of gold, the coins scattered over the rocks, and the robbers left without any loot. Since then, the deep cave, supposedly strewn with gold, began to be called a “piggy bank with coins.”
A lucky fox hunter's find
It’s surprising that the legend about the rich cave has been around for a long time, but it was discovered only in 1971. This was done by two fox hunters, who looked into the hole behind a darting fox, and found a huge karst void. Out of curiosity, they entered the cave and found it interesting. On the very first day, the hunters discovered an amazingly beautiful hall with limestone formations. They called it the “pastor’s room” or “shepherd’s room.” For another two months, the newly minted researchers independently paved the way through the dungeon, making excavations in narrow places, finding more and more halls with outlandish figures, limestone stalactites and stalagmites, lakes and waterfalls. Each new room was more amazing than the previous one.
After two months of hard work, the friends turned to professional geologists for help, who determined what calcinites and clay deposits were present in the karst cave. We carried out almost hidden lighting, which allowed us to see the incredible beauty created by nature itself. In some places steps were cut down.
Soon the new cave was opened to tourists, taking measures to preserve the untouched natural beauty of the surrounding rocks and the cave itself. Many halls have been named by visitors: the Crib, the Red Dome, the Parsonage, Our Lady, the Waterfall, the Imperfect Chapel, the Fountain of Tears and even the Wedding Cake.
Information for tourists The length of the tourist route is 350 meters.
The maximum depth of descent is 50 meters.
The air temperature in the cave averages 18 degrees throughout the year, as it is warmed and cooled by water oozing from the rocks. It’s nice to wash your face with cool water from a thermal lake on a hot day.
In some places you can clearly see traces of bygone eras, for example, a fossilized chain of dinosaur tracks that walked in those places during the Jurassic period 175 million years ago.
The entrance and exit to the cave are in different places, so you should stay close to the guide.
Fatima
Fatima has been a famous religious center for almost a century. The events that took place in these places between 1915 and 1917 are called by the Catholic Church a true miracle. You will hear a story about how shepherd children met the Virgin Mary, who introduced herself to them as the Angel of Peace and told them about upcoming events. Every year, pilgrims from many countries come to Fatima to see with their own eyes the place where miracles happened.

5th day

Excursion: Mafra – Village of Jose Franco Ericeira – lunch – Sightseeing of Lisbon. The excursion ends at 18:00.
The province of Portugal can surprise and even amaze. Despite the fact that the state is located at the westernmost tip of Europe, and perhaps precisely because of this, many rare cultural and historical attractions are concentrated in Portugal. They all date back to different centuries, and different peoples contributed to their appearance.
Ericeira
The colorful fishing town of Ericeira, comfortably nestled on the beautiful ocean shore, has retained its originality to this day. For many centuries the village was the most important fishing center of the region. The excursion program includes an introduction to local life and a sightseeing tour along the embankment.
The village of Jose Franco
There are many settlements in Portugal that can be called open-air museums. The village of Jose Franco is one of them. This is a typical Portuguese village of the early 20th century. It was founded by potter Jose Franco around an ancient castle, church and mill. The town consists of small, cozy houses. In the village you can taste a traditional local lunch, consisting of delicious local bread and dried sausage, which is made according to an old recipe. It is customary to wash down simple peasant food with regional wine.
Mafra
The last point of the excursion is the town of Mafra, where a gigantic palace and monastery complex is located. He's great! And a grandiose structure appeared thanks to the project of King Joan V, who set out to eclipse the greatness of the Spanish Escorial itself.
The first part of the tour of Lisbon includes a visit to: Independence Avenue; Restorers Square, which is solemnly decorated with a granite obelisk (1886); Rossio Square with the famous statue of King Pedro IV, luxurious bronze fountains and the beautiful building of the National Theater of Dona Maria II; Commerce Square, where the palace of King Manuel was located in the 15th-17th centuries. The tour will continue with a trip along the embankment. You will see the grandiose April 25 Bridge.
In the next part of your Lisbon tour, you will visit the Jerónimos Monastery in Belém.
It was built at the beginning of the 16th century to commemorate the era of great geographical discoveries. According to experts, this monastery is the most impressive architectural structure in Portugal in the ornate Manueline style. Another shock awaits you - acquaintance with the sophisticated monument of the 16th century - the Belem Tower, which resembles a fairy-tale castle.
In the final part of the tour, you will see the Monument to the Discoverers, which was made of noble granite at the time when the dictator Salazar was in power. The monument reflects the attitude towards the eventful past of the once great maritime Empire.

This glorious settlement was called the “city of brides”, as the monarchs spent time there after their weddings. The excursion program includes a walk through the streets, acquaintance with the Chapel of Nossa Señera do Carmo in the central square, the ancient Church of St. Mary and the Arab fortress.
Acquaintance with the medieval abbey in Alcobas, built in the early Gothic style. Representatives of the Burgundy dynasty are buried in the monastery. The “Monastery of Silence” is distinguished by its sophistication, which is why the poet-king Dinis loved it so much. It was there that the most tragic and romantic royal couple, Ines de Castro and Pedro I, found rest.
The tour then continues to Batalha, where the Monastery of Santa Maria da Victoria is located. This monastery is a true masterpiece of Portuguese Gothic architecture. It was built by King Joan I in honor of the victory over the Spaniards in 1385. Inspection of the tomb of representatives of the Avis royal dynasty, distinguished by a mixture of Manueline and English Gothic styles.
The last point of the trip is the town of Tomar on the banks of the Naban River. It is located 140 km from Lisbon. The settlement arose during the Reconquista and for a long time it was ruled by the Knights Templar. Inspection of the majestic Monastery of the Order of Christ from 1160. This is the most grandiose building in Portugal. It is possible that the mysterious Grail is hidden there. Return to your hotel in Lisbon.

Then you will see the Statue of Christ, which is a copy of the famous monument in Rio De Janeiro and was built in honor of God who saved Lisbon in World War II.
There are many ancient cities in Portugal, but Évora in the province of Alentejo (130 kilometers from Lisbon) occupies a special position. UNESCO has included the entire architectural ensemble of the old city on the World Heritage List.
The intriguing history of Evora began in 80-72 BC. The city was actively built and developed by the Romans, Moors, and Portuguese kings of the Middle Ages. Great events happened in the history of Évora, for example, it was there that the Aviz Order of Knights was founded, and in 1832 King Miguel capitulated.
Évora is famous for its architectural and historical attractions, including the central square of Don Geraldo with arcades, where some of the columns are of ancient origin. Here during the Middle Ages executions of heretics and witches were carried out. Participants of the excursion will see the Church of Santo Antonio of the 16th century, the Temple of Diana of the 2nd century AD, the only surviving Roman temple in all of Portugal.
The unprecedentedly beautiful Evora Cathedral in the Roman-Gothic style, built between 1186 and 1204, deserves special attention. This is a story about the Classic Portugal tour (Lisbon - Porto) in late January - early February 2016.
In winter, from cold Moscow you want to go somewhere warmer. Therefore, this time Portugal was chosen quite unexpectedly. At this time it is already 12-15 degrees there, and most importantly the sun and blue sky! :)
There are almost no winter excursion tours around Europe now. We took a ready-made tour from DSBW from the Portuguese tour operator Lusitana Sol. Lisbon - Porto, 7 nights, 8 days. + one more day had to be added when it turned out that Portuguese Airlines had canceled the return flight on Thursdays. Just booked an extra night in the center of Lisbon.
The total length of all travel on the tour by bus is 1,315 km.
The tour is standard, but perhaps the story will be useful to those who are just about to undertake something similar. Yes, and I can answer questions, if necessary. And so - it’s just nice to remember it yourself with pictures :)

Day 1. 01/28/16 Thu (Moscow – Lisbon)
Flight by regular flight “TAR Portugal” TR1231 05:40 – 08:30 from Domodedovo (everything was on schedule). The flight, of course, although direct, is quite long - 6 hours, and the plane is a bit stuffy. We are approaching, and over the entire Iberian Peninsula there is continuous multilayer clouds. And only just before Lisbon the clouds thinned out somewhat and it became clear what was down there. And below is the OCEAN coast, Tagus, and finally Lisbon :)

Everything went quite quickly, we went out, and we were met by a representative of Lusitana Sol. As it turned out later, this is our driver for the entire tour, Andrey. Apart from us, there is only one other girl, Maya, and we go to the minibus and go to hotels.
“Hotel of the selected category”, for us it is “Altis Park 4*”. Accommodation at the hotel is promised only after 14:00, but they can check in immediately without any problems. It immediately turns out that there is no swimming pool that I was counting on for relaxation - it is simply closed at this time of year. I asked for a “higher” room and was given a room on the 11th floor, but, as it turned out, on the back side overlooking the courtyard. The request to change to a frontal one, although with visible displeasure, was still granted. And we got a “view of the Tagus”, albeit from the level of the 9th floor. But, as it turned out, the numbers on the front side are larger and newer. Then, after returning from Porto, other members of our tour “fought” for such numbers. groups :) (and we haven’t even started).
We changed clothes, grabbed a small backpack and went to the center. The metro station to the left of the hotel exit is two steps away. This is "Olaias" - reputed to be one of the most beautiful in Lisbon.

All inscriptions are in Portuguese. To be fair, then I learned to switch to English and figured out the details. I had to use the help of an aborigine who had just bought his ticket. He happily helped me buy two “Viva Viagem” tickets and “fill” each of them with 5E according to the “zapping” system – i.e. spending money as you use it on any type of Lisbon transport - metro, tram, bus, funiculars, ski lifts and even, it seems, a commuter train (I haven’t checked, see http://discoverportugal.ru/transport-portugalii/transport-lissabona).
We drove 5 stops with a change to the Martim Moniz station. We got up and walked around the square to the final stop of the famous 28th tram. The first one was already leaving and we didn’t get to it. But pretty soon the next yellow “doghouse” came up, as the Lisbon people themselves call them :)

We settled down on the back platform - a convenient place for viewing and photographing.

Very cool idea! There doesn't seem to be anything like it anywhere. Instead of the boring "Bus Tourist" there is a small, rattling yellow trailer. In addition, a real type of TRANSPORT. Lisbon residents use it with all their might, and not just “mad” tourists” :) Lisbon is truly a “city on hills”, so convenient ground transport is a very necessary thing. And the funiculars and the Santa Justa tram lift help on the steepest sections!
We drove straight along the avenue for a couple of stops before turning right into the Alfama neighborhoods. And then - this is the real Lisbon :).

By the way, they are all electric here, as far as I understand.

Narrow streets, roller coasters, azuléjos, …

This area is a must-visit - here is the part of the city that was not destroyed by the earthquake (1755), and the Cathedral of Sa and San Vicente de Fora and, of course, the St Gorge fortress on the mountain...

We'll get there again...

We ran out to the mirador Santa Luzia, where many people go out - there are views of the Tagus and cafes. But we drive further past the Se Cathedral and “roll out” to Baisha past Commerce Square.

And then we begin the climb to Chiado and Bairro Alto. The “slides” begin again and after one of them we decided to leave before reaching the Estrela Basilica - the second terminal station on the 28th.
... these are the passers-by

Directly along the tram tracks in the opposite direction we descend again to the “literary” quarters of Chiado. At the restaurant “A Brasileira” we “check in” on a chair next to Fernando Pessoa.

We went out to Commerce Square and looked around...
