In this article we will tell you where, how and when it blows in the "land of smiles".

Western coast of the Gulf of Thailand:

Where to kite in Thailand:

Pak Nam Pran (Pranburi)

Favorite place of the famous KTA (Kite Tour Asia) event. The place where world famous kitesurfers gather in March to compete in technicality and height of jumps. In order to hold qualifying races in the discipline of slalom for the youth of all Azzi and Oceania for the future Olympic Games.

Spacious free beach, good wind flat water, beauty

Catfish Roy Yot (Dolphin Bay)

Very flat water, light wind, beauty

Hua Hin, Cha Am

Hua Hin Beach - kite spot, overloaded

Chumphon, Prachuap Khirikan

Peculiarities: From November to January, the wind blows in a Northerly direction, catching up with the wave. This is a strong wind with an average speed of 10m/s. The south wind blows from February to May. The average speed is 7m/s. This wind direction is accompanied by high ebbs and even water. But, it should be noted that this direction does not work at all spots, for example, in Chumkhon the South wind does not blow.

So let's go in order:

Kitesurfing in Pak Nam Pran, Thailand

There are several windy spots in Thailand where you can really kitesurf in comfort.

Pak Nam Pran is best suited for riding and learning to kite.. There are spacious and clean beaches, restaurants on the shore, even wind, a reversible wake winch and a multilingual kite school that issues international certificates IKO, JollyKite.

South is blowing in Pak Nam Pran

  • Season: November-January, February-mid-May (inclusive)
  • Best months for skiing: December, March
  • 9-10 m/s (from 6 to 15 m/s)
  • Average wind speed in South: 7-8 m/s (from 5 to 14 m/s)
  • Wave to the North: 1.5 meters
  • Wave to the South: 0.1 meter (flat water)
  • Depth to North:
  • Depth to South:
  • Bottom: sand
  • Beach length: 5 km
  • Beach width: to the South - 50 meters, to the North - 20 meters
  • Water traffic: 1 out of 10 points
  • Beach traffic: 1 out of 10 points (there are no package tourists in the village, no fishing boats and other things that can interfere with kitesurfing)
  • Dangers in the water:
  • Coast: sand

On the West Coast There are other spots in the Gulf of Thailand with similar conditions.

Kitesurfing in Hua Hin, Thailand

Hua Hin is located 30 km from Pak Nam Pran, so the conditions for kiting are similar here.

But unlike Pak Nam Pran, Hua Hin is big tourist town, and in this regard, the beaches here are crowded with vacationers and various entertainments for beach holiday. Water scooters, horse riding along the beach, water rides, all this interferes with kitesurfing.

The beach itself in Hua Hin is wide, there are many kite stations and schools, but the wind on the city beach is as good as in Pak Nam Pran.

Cons of Hua Hin for experienced kiters and beginners

For skiers and novice kiters, traffic on the water will be a serious problem - a lot of kites, water scooters, and swimming beachgoers. And on the shore, crowds of people walk, tourists ride horses and sun loungers and sun umbrellas stand in 5 rows.

Horses are very cute animals, but unclean, and they go to the "toilet" right on the beach. So I think horses are the main problem. =)

With the North direction, the entire West coast of the Gulf of Thailand is attacked by a breaking wave, which exhausts students faster than in the South wind. The water comes much closer and the beach - the area for launching and landing kites decreases because of this.

  • Season: November-January, February-April (inclusive)
  • Best months for skiing: December, March
  • Average wind speed in North: 9-10 m/s (from 6 to 15 m/s)

  • Water traffic: 7 out of 10 points (quite busy)
  • Beach traffic: 9 out of 10 points (the beach is very busy)
  • Dangers in the water: jellyfish (jellyfish can be easily found in the coastal waters of all Asia. They are found in Vietnam, the Philippines, Thailand, Cambodia, China, etc. Therefore, when you go on vacation to these countries, keep in mind that it is safer to swim in leggings and Lycra).
  • Coast: sand

Catfish Roy Yot (Dolphin Bay)

Lovely kitesurf beach in a small European village. It is located 20 km south of Pak Nam Pran. North wind does not work here, the South direction works much worse than in Pak Nam Pran and Hua Hin. But on the other hand, from mid-January to mid-February, when there is practically no wind across the entire West Coast, there are heavenly conditions for kiting. Perfectly flat water, kilometers of shallow water and wind to the shore. In addition to all of the above, it is very beautiful here: wild and green islands that grow out of the sea, deserted beaches, palm groves with an abundance of coconuts.

Chumkhon

For sailing enthusiasts. In the North wind, a rather large and even wave is catching up, so everyone who prefers to ride on boards of direction is welcome to this hospitable town. The south wind does not inflate here due to the features of the terrain.

  • Wave to the North: 2-3 meters
  • Depth to North: depth starts immediately

  • Beach traffic: 5 out of 10 points
  • Dangers in the water: jellyfish
  • Coast: sand

Kitesurfing in Thailand on the islands of Koh Phangan (Phangan), Koh Samui

The wind also appears seasonally on the islands of Koh Phangan and Koh Samui. There is much less wind there than on the West coast of the Gulf of Thailand. This is due to the abundance of mountains that interfere with the wind, as well as the lack of suitable places to launch a kite and a corresponding lack of places to ride in most windy directions. There are also kitesurfing schools there, but without wind it is not very easy to learn, since it is energy-consuming for a beginner to pilot and restart a 17-18 meter kite from the water.

  • Season: December - March
  • Best months for skiing: February March
  • Average wind speed: 7 m/s (from 5 to 9 m/s)

  • Beach traffic: 5 out of 10 points
  • Dangers in the water: clam-cone
  • Coast: sand

In summer, from July to September, it blows in Phuket

Phuket is rich in deserted beaches, great for kitesurfing, but the wind on the island is rather rare. It is possible to learn, but if you have little time, most likely you will get up on the board next time. In winter, the wind practically does not blow here. The wind starts to appear in March and blows until September

  • Season: March-September
  • Best months for skiing: June
  • Average wind speed: 6 m/s (from 3 to 9 m/s)
  • Wave: 0.1 meter (flat water)
  • Depth: depth starts 200 meters from the beach
  • Bottom: sand, sometimes sharp stones
  • Beach length: 3 km
  • Beach width: very narrow
  • Water traffic: 5 out of 10 points
  • Beach traffic: 5 out of 10 points
  • Dangers in the water: jellyfish, stones, shells
  • Coast: sand, grass

Kitesurfing in Pattaya

Whatever your friends or Internet scribblers tell you, believe me, you can go kitesurfing in Pattaya. It blows in winter with varying degrees of success, but still.

  • Season: December - April
  • Best months for skiing: March

Kitesurfing in Thailand:
Kitesurfing in Thailand is quite developed contrary to popular belief that in this country you can only sunbathe on the beaches and indulge in entertainment. Between May and October in Thailand, there is either a lot of precipitation in the form of frequent rains or short-term heavy rains. The season of excellent wind is considered to be the period from November to April. The main part of the infrastructure designed for kiting and windsurfing in Thailand is located on east coast Gulf of Thailand. For these kinds of active rest it is required to overcome about 500 kilometers in any direction from Bangkok.

Cha Am and Hua Hin

A place on the shores of the Gulf of Thailand, located three hours from the capital of Thailand in the direction of Phuket. You can get to this area using a taxi or public transport services. Taxis can be hired directly at the airport by saying Hua Hin to the taxi driver. The cost of renting a taxi is about 2000 baht.

The spot is suitable for almost everyone, both beginners and experienced kitesurfers and windsurfers.

Hua Hin is basically a kite town. Among local residents there are very few skiers, which cannot be said about those who come. Hua Hin Beach is sandy with fairly uniform sand and no rocks on the beach. In this area, rainy and windy weather is observed from May to November, and from March to May is the best time to travel.

By appearance Hua Hin is more like a port with a huge cluster of restaurants, all kinds of bars and shops. Unlike Hua Hin, Cha Am is a calm place that will suit lovers a relaxing holiday and silence. Cha Am has 5 kilometers of beautiful beach with a small number of people. From mid-February until almost the end of April, a fairly strong wind blows, which makes this place on the coast ideal for training. Between November and January, the wind calms down a bit, but becomes more stable, which is especially noticeable in the morning hours. This season is characterized by the appearance of rather high waves on the surface of a relatively calm bay.

Skating and training takes place on the main city beach of Cha Am, to the north of the beach itself there is a station and a school for teaching skiing. The conditions for training on the beach are amazing: the nature is very beautiful, and the depth is up to the waist. Such conditions are ideal for training, as they prevent serious injuries during training.

This place is very convenient for windsurfers and kiters of different skill levels. The bottom of the sea is sandy, the winds in this area are not particularly strong, which is conducive to learning to windsurf. The winds in this area are from January to March. This area of the coast is not crowded. Along the coast, south of Ha Am and near Hua Hin, within the city limits of Pran Buri, there is a convenient place for outdoor activities. The wind in this area appears, as a rule, in the afternoon and in the evening, and closer to midnight, the time of parties begins, of which there are a huge number. A well-developed infrastructure will not allow a tourist who loves active recreation to get bored day or night in the absence of wind.

Ko Samui is an island in the Gulf of Thailand on which Thailand is trying to preserve untouched world wildlife. There are several ways to get to the island. This can be done by plane from Bangkok Airport or by water transport. The island is connected by air with the islands of Singapore and Krabi, as well as with the cities of Pattaya and the capital of Thailand, Bangkok, and flights to Bangkok and back are carried out several times a day.

When traveling to the island, you can save money by spending only about 800 baht. To do this, you need to take a train from Bangkok to Surat Thani station, and then take a ferry in a neighboring town called DonSak. From the port of this city, ferry service is established with all nearby islands.

If you choose a bus as a means of transportation, you should take it either on Khao San Road, which is one of the most famous in Bangkok, or from the southern bus station. Buses run daily at 6 pm. When purchasing a bus ticket through local travel agencies, it is worth buying a ferry ticket to Koh Samui right away. The fact is that by buying tickets for both transport at once, you can save a little, since purchasing tickets separately will be more expensive. When choosing a bus as a means of transportation, it should be borne in mind that, having departed from Bangkok at six o'clock in the evening, you will arrive at the port only in the morning.

On the island for swimming, the south is best East Coast, here on the coast it is quite deserted and there are no resorts. Here, on the shore, there is a local kiter training school and the tourism infrastructure is quite well established. The sea on this coast forms a lagoon, which, in the presence of wind, becomes an ideal place for skiing, both for beginners and experienced lovers of this type of recreation. The wind wave rises at a distance of 700 meters from the coast, behind a reef, which is insurance for the lagoon from strong winds. The water surface of the lagoon almost always has a mirror surface. The bottom of the lagoon is mostly sand.
This place is very popular among kiters, and almost no one practices windsurfing here. This place is located within the boundaries of Samui Orchid Resort. There are usually few people here, and there are practically no tourists. There are still places for kiters in the area, but they have large reefs, which is dangerous for beginner kiters. It is best to ride in this area in the month of January, since November and December are characterized by rainy weather, despite the fact that 200 kilometers from this place, in Chumphon during this period it is dry and sunny.

Chumphon is one of the most popular holiday destinations in Thailand. The area is a great spot for both kitesurfing and windsurfing. This area is located between Cha Am and Hua Hin in the northern part and Surat Thani in the south. The opening of a local airport in the area is already on the way, but the distances are not particularly large, which allows you to get rid of unnecessary flights.
to speed up the trip to this area allows the use of the aircraft when moving to the town of Surat Thani. The flight takes only about 30 minutes. Moving out of the city fixed-route taxis in Chumphon almost every hour, and the road takes about 2-3 hours to the final destination.

It should be noted the excellent transport links between the resort areas of the country. You can get to Chumphon using any type of transport, and it doesn’t really matter which of the regions of Thailand you will be in, for example, the road from the capital of the state takes about seven and a half hours.

If you are starting from Bangkok, you will have to buy a ticket and take the bus to Southern Bus Station. Bus departure times are as follows: 9-00, 11-00, 14-00 and 21.30. A large number of carriers start their routes on one of the famous streets of Bangkok called Khao San Road. Any of the carriers will take you to Chumphon. The port of this city is an ideal starting point for those tourists who plan to continue their journey. Here you can buy tickets both for ferries that run to the islands, and for speed boats in the same directions.

Chumphon is a sand spot designed for confident riders. The winds in this area are moderate. This area for skiing is most suitable during the period of November-December. In the south of this area, it rains at this time, and in this area it is dry, sunny and cool. Usually the wind appears in the morning and in the afternoon, and in the evening you can enjoy the resort life of the city.

On the island, in contrast to the places for kitesurfing, there are many lively bars where you can find both the most inexpensive and very sophisticated expensive drinks and cocktails. In the evenings, colorful shows, performances and live music are always organized there.
