Pathos or Protaras: which is better? This question is relevant for tourists traveling to Cyprus. After all, each resort has its own advantages, and you want to choose the most suitable one. Let's compare Paphos and Protaras and find out where it's better to relax.

Distance to airport

Paphos has its own airport of the same name, from which the city center is only 15 km. The distance from Paphos airport to Protaras is more than 170 km. Therefore, for those who are going to Protaras, it is easier to buy tickets to another airport - in Larnaca. From here to Protaras is about 70 km. You can get to the resort by public transport, or more conveniently by taxi, although it is more expensive. There is another good option: renting a car at the airport. Not only will you have easy access to Protaras (the roads in Cyprus are very good, although they drive on the left), but you can then travel around the island on your own.

And yet, in terms of convenience and speed of travel from the airport, Paphos has the advantage. So if this criterion is important to you, choose this resort for your holiday.

Climate and weather

The distance from Paphos to Protaras is just under 190 km. This is significant if you want to get from resort to resort, but has little effect on climate and weather. In Cyprus, the climate is mild, the season begins in April and ends in October in all resorts. The temperature of the air and sea water will differ by one or two degrees, this is almost imperceptible to tourists. The same goes for precipitation, there will be practically no rain during the season, but there will be a lot of sun!

In July-August the heat is at its peak in both Paphos and Protaras. At this time, elderly tourists and children, as well as people with high blood pressure, should be careful. And in September and May both resorts have the best conditions! So in the weather competition between Protaras and Paphos, friendship wins!

Attractions

Protaras or Paphos: which is better if you prefer a rich excursion program? The fact is that Cyprus has a rich history. And even those who come here for a beach holiday need to visit at least a few interesting places.

Paphos and its surroundings are simply crammed with ancient sights:

  • archaeological park,
  • Paphos Castle,
  • Catacombs of Saint Solomonia.

There are also Christian churches here, such as the Church of Panagia Christopolitissa. Paphos is also closely connected with ancient Greek mythology. Here, according to legend, Aphrodite was born, and in the vicinity of the resort there are places associated with the goddess. You can visit the baths of Aphrodite, the stone (rock) of Aphrodite.

Protaras is more modest in terms of attractions. But this does not mean that there is nothing interesting in its surroundings! You can visit:

    • Makronisos Tombs,

  • national park and
  • Church of the Prophet Elijah.

In addition, you can relax in Protaras and go on an excursion to Paphos. How long does it take to get from Paphos to Protaras? By car approximately 2.5 hours. You can also get there by public transport, but it will require transfers and take much longer.

So, there are more archaeological monuments and historical sites in Paphos. Keep this in mind if you are counting on a good excursion program.

Beach holidays and other entertainment

Protaras is a very relaxing holiday. This is a small but comfortable resort. This alone is worth it: a landmark and a place for a pleasant beach holiday. Paphos is a little larger than Protaras, but the holiday there is also quite calm. It can even be called respectable, there are more expensive hotels and restaurants there.

Protaras has another advantage. If you get bored with the silence, the noisy and cheerful resort of Ayia Napa is located ten kilometers away. There's plenty to do there, with beach parties happening every day during the season!

If you want to have a good rest, choose Protaras. There you will have a leisurely beach holiday with the opportunity to have a lot of fun in Ayia Napa.

Prices

There are more respectable hotel complexes in Paphos. Of course, it is very convenient and pleasant to relax there, but you will have to pay for such pleasure. There are also more expensive restaurants here. When it comes to food in shops or local wine, prices are almost the same as in Protaras.

All beaches in Cyprus are free, you can use toilets, changing rooms and showers. You will only have to pay money for renting sun loungers and sun umbrellas. Want to save money? Bring your beach towel and mat and sunbathe absolutely free!

Protaras is slightly ahead of Paphos in terms of price level. However, this is very conditional. After all, it all depends on the hotel you choose and the cost of the tour, which is set by the agency. Look for great deals!

We hope our review will help you figure out which resort to choose for your vacation. In any case, you will have a good time in Cyprus. Tourists like the sunny island so much that many choose it for vacation every year!

Are you planning to fly to Cyprus in 2019? I think yes. Otherwise, why would you be interested in the question of how to get to Protaras. A good decision, considering that Protaras is one of the best resort areas of the island.

Air ticket. If you are just planning to fly to the island, then first decide on your destination. The best way to get to Protaras is to board a plane that follows the route Moscow - Larnaca. Why was the starting point taken in the capital of our Motherland? Everything is obvious here. From Moscow, flights to Cyprus are operated from three airports (Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo, Vnukovo), the flight schedule is many times longer than from St. Petersburg, for example, and thirdly, prices are lower.

So, as we have already found out, the best way to get to the Protaras resort is to buy a plane ticket and fly to Larnaca airport. And you can get to the resort by taxi. Or make a reservation in advance and get to the place by transfer or take a bus.

Having visited Cyprus more than once, I tried all these methods and now I can tell you about it in more detail.

1. How to get to Protaras by taxi

Get to Protaras by taxi. Comfort, punctuality, a minimum of body movements on your part - these are signs of civilized service. Once I was traveling from Larnaca airport to Protaras by taxi and started talking with the Mercedes driver about work and life. So, the taxi driver told me that, for example, it is impossible to be late for a client in principle. And passenger safety comes first.

I want to convey my message to you. If comfort, safety, clarity and minimum order execution time are important to you, then choose this transport. You can order a taxi online, through a dispatcher by phone, or catch the “chef” the old-fashioned way, at the exit from the airport.

Let me add that the easiest way to order is through the online booking system. In this case, you do not need to know either Greek or English. It is enough to fill out the order form in Russian in advance, pay and the car will be delivered to the place on time. The driver will meet you at the airport and does not need to explain to him which address to go to. Very comfortably!

Finally, I’ll leave a link where I’ve already ordered a taxi more than once and everything has always been clear, without a hitch - here > > >.

2. If you want to save money, choose a transfer to Protaras

Transfer to Protaras. Now I will tell you how to get from Larnaca airport to Protaras cheaper than by taxi. There is a transport company in Cyprus, Intui.Travel, which provides tourists with various transfers: from bus to limousine.

How it works? You place an order on the website, and the transport company reserves seats on the transport. Moreover, even if you buy one ticket, and the rest of the seats in the car are free, you will be driven alone, like in a taxi, but the delivery price will not increase.

So, one day I booked one seat in a 6-seater Mercedes Benz Viano minivan. The flight from Moscow was delayed for a couple of hours. I had to call the transport company to change the delivery time to the hotel. Fortunately, I met a Russian-speaking employee and explained the situation. When I arrived at Larnaca airport (late, of course), they met me, escorted me to the car, helped me with my suitcases and drove me to the address. At the same time, no additional payments were required, although I was alone in the car. Moreover, you will be taken directly to the hotel, and not dropped off somewhere at a bus stop.

So, what do you need to do to order such a transfer? Go to the transport company’s website - here, choose a route, fill out the transfer order form, pay and you’re done. Exactly at the designated time you will be met at the airport.

3. Travel from Larnaca Airport to Protaras by shuttle bus

For a long time it was impossible to get directly from Larnaca airport to Protaras. And finally, one transport company has opened a route on which tourists can travel from the airport to Protaras without a transfer. Now I will tell you about this new convenient route.

By Kapnos bus. For the convenience of tourists, a direct route has been organized from Larnaca airport to Protaras. Kapnos Airport Shuttle buses depart daily from the airport.

How to find? Without leaving the airport, go to the booth called Kapnos Airport Shuttle. There you need to buy a ticket.

What is the price? The bus fare is as follows: one trip (adult) - 9 euros, child - 5 euros. These prices are current as of May 2019.

Bus schedule for the route Larnaca (airport) - Protaras (May, 2019)

4. To Protaras by bus with a transfer

Bus to Finikoudes

I’ll tell you how I once had to get from Larnaca airport to Protaras by bus with transfers. Here is how it was. I flew to Cyprus light, without a suitcase. Time was running out, I thought I’d take the bus for a ride.

I left the airport at a public transport stop. It's easy to find. When you reach the area where passengers are picked up from the plane, turn right onto the escalator. You go upstairs and go outside. There will be a roadway where taxis drop people off. Turn left and you will see a stop there.

First get to the city. About half an hour later, bus number 425 arrived. I got on it and after 10 minutes I found myself on the Phinikoudes embankment in Larnaca. By the way, check with the driver where he is going when leaving from Phinikoudes embankment. Because the bus that goes to the airport stops there, as well as the one that goes from the airport.

Having had a hearty lunch, after about 50 minutes I was already sitting in a comfortable green Intercity Buses bus, which took me to Ayia Napa Square, next to the monastery. Everyone knows this central place and it’s difficult to get lost there.

In total, to get to Protaras, I had to take three buses (two city and one intercity). I waited at the airport for half an hour for the bus to Larnaca and it took 10 minutes to get to the city. Then I spent about an hour on the Phinikoudes embankment waiting for the bus from Larnaca to Ayia Napa and it took about half an hour to get there. Then in Ayia Napa I switched to the third bus, which, fortunately, did not have to wait long and for another 40 minutes it traveled from stop to stop between the two resorts until it finally got there.

Now there is a direct bus to Protaras and there is no need to travel with transfers. But keep in mind that the shuttle stops only at two stops in Protaras: at the office of the travel company Eman Tours and at the McDonald's restaurant. And you still need to get to your hotel or apartment somehow. Therefore, think about the transfer. A very convenient thing! You will be met and taken directly to the hotel. Once again I leave a link where you can order a transfer from Larnaca airport to Protaras -

5. How to get to Protaras with a rented car

Yes, you can pick up a car right at the airport and drive to Protaras in a rented car. By the way, many tourists do this if they know for sure that they will rent a car in Cyprus. It is better to order a car in advance via the Internet. And then everything is simple. Upon your arrival, the rental car is driven to the airport parking lot and you drive away on your own wheels.
